Fantasy Football Week 17: Ranking the Quarterbacks

Fantasy Football Week 17: Ranking the Quarterbacks

It’s Week 17 of the NFL season, and everything is a mess for fantasy. It’s really tough to tell which quarterbacks are going to sit, and which will play considering all of the playoff scenarios. There’s certainly a chance that Peyton Manning and Tom Brady don’t play this week if things break right for the Broncos and Patriots, respectively.

For these rankings, we’ll operate under the assumption that everyone is going to start, no matter what, but be sure to monitor each player’s situation as the week goes on.

1. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys (WSH)

Romo certainly falls into the category of uncertainty this week. The Cowboys have already locked up the NFC East, but they could compete for a first-round bye, so the situation with Romo and DeMarco Murray will be interesting. If he goes, though, Romo will have a huge day against the terrible Redskins defense. Romo has scored at least 20 points in each of his past three games, and has thrown a combined 10 touchdowns in that stretch. To say the least, Romo is on fire, and faces a Washington team that is allowing the second most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in the past four weeks, per our fantasy against rankings (paid subscription required).

Projected Statistics: 300 yards, four touchdowns

2. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (TEN)

Everything that could have gone wrong for the Colts on Sunday against the Cowboys did go wrong. As a team, they’ve struggled in the past three weeks, so I could see Luck playing all four quarters this week to try and give Indy a confidence boost heading into the playoffs. They have an easy matchup versus the Titans, who have allowed the sixth most points to opposing quarterbacks in the past four weeks, and despite his recent struggles, Luck is rated as the most consistent signal caller this week, according to our advanced metrics. Don’t hold back on Luck if it looks like he’s starting.

Projected Statistics: 370 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions

3. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (DET)

Make no mistake, Rodgers will be starting this game and finishing it. Green Bay’s showdown against the Lions will decide the NFC North, and will likely give the victor a first-round bye (I frankly don’t understand the playoff scenarios to know for sure). Rodgers has been in a slight fantasy slump as of late, but owners obviously aren’t going to sit him now. Prior to Week 15, Rodgers had 24 or more fantasy points in nine of his starts. He has a tough assignment in Detroit, but at this point in the season, Rodgers likely got you to the point you’re at now, so you’re rolling with him.

Projected Statistics: 350 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions

4. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons (CAR)

Out of all the top-of-the-line quarterbacks, Ryan is the only one in a legitimate playoff matchup. The loser goes home in this one, so rest assured Julio Jones will be on the field no matter what, and Ryan will be slinging it against a bad Panthers secondary. On Sunday, the Panthers gave up an 81-yard touchdown to Brian Hoyer and Jordan Cameron, the Cleveland Browns’ longest play of the year, and they’ve allowed over 16 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks on the year. Ryan hasn’t gone under 16 points in a single game since Week 12, and he’s thrown nine touchdowns in his past four games.

Projected Statistics: 250 yards, three touchdowns

5. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos (CIN)

Depending upon what happens Monday night, Manning has the highest chance of any of these guys to rest in Week 17. Heading into this week, he’s clearly been nursing some sort of injury, given how Denver has drifted toward using the run, but if he goes, there’s no reason not to use him. Again, Manning has gotten you to this point, so you might as well keep using him.

Projected Statistics: 300 yards, two touchdowns, one interception

6. Tom Brady, New England Patriots (BUF)

The Bills are a top five defense in the NFL right now, and it seems like not enough people are talking about it. Derek Carr was successful against them in a win that knocked the Bills out of the playoffs. I just doubt that Buffalo will be as interested in this game compared to if they had a chance to grab a Wild Card spot, so Brady won’t be facing the same Bills defense that Rodgers faced two weeks ago. It still is by no means an easy matchup, but Brady and the Patriots will want to keep up with the Broncos and hang on to the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and he’ll be throwing it around just as much, and I picture him and Manning having similar days.

Projected Statistics: 300 yards, two touchdowns, one interception

7. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers (CIN)

If the Bengals lose Monday night, the Steelers will face them for the division title, and could possibly knock Cincinnati out of playoff contention (if some other teams win), so Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and co. will all be in the game. Roethlisberger has 10 games this season with either 300 yards or two or more touchdowns, more than Russell Wilson or Philip Rivers and hasn’t thrown an interception in three games. Roethlisberger may not rip off a 30-point game, since this could be a big Le’Veon Bell matchup against an awful Bengals run defense, but he’ll find the end zone multiple times.

Projected Statistics: 250 yards, two touchdowns

8. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers (KC)

If the Chargers win Sunday, they are in the playoffs. This is just the kind of game that Rivers lives for. Rivers is obviously hampered by some sort of injury at the moment, so he won’t be a top-five quarterback this week, but he’s certainly worthy of a start for a team in the fantasy championships. Despite throwing three interceptions to a very good 49ers defense, Rivers still led the Chargers back and scored 24 fantasy points. This is the kind of game that Rivers and the Chargers will show up for and win.

Projected Statistics: 240 yards, two touchdowns

9. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks (STL)

I thought Wilson would be slowed down by Arizona’s defense Sunday night, and instead he erupted for 35 points and 339 passing yards, his most all season. The Rams defense might actually be better than the Cardinals, allowing the fewest points to opposing quarterbacks in the past four weeks, but I still have faith in Wilson. Since his Week 4 bye, Wilson has seven games with 18 or more fantasy points. While he may not break that mark this week, he’ll certainly get close to it.

Projected Statistics: 190 yards, two touchdowns, six carries, 30 rushing yards

10. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (ATL)

Two weeks after a serious car crash, and a week after missing a game with the back injury that resulted from that crash, Newton had 22 fantasy points and 63 rushing yards. Granted, the Browns rushing defense is one of the worst units in the league, but the pass defense is nothing to mess with, even with Joe Haden out. Imagine what he’ll do against the Falcons, who have allowed the second most passing yards in the past four weeks. With Jonathan Stewart clicking, Carolina’s offense has suddenly been hot, and while it might not win in Atlanta, I like Newton being able to pick up some extra fantasy value on the ground.

Projected Statistics: 250 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, five carries, 30 rushing yards
