Fantasy Football Week 2: Sit These 3 Quarterbacks

Like the real NFL, the quarterback position in fantasy football is one of the most important positions.  Although most owners waiting until the fifth or sixth rounds of drafts to take a quarterback, having a strong quarterback is the key to fantasy success.

Teams who started Peyton Manning were almost guaranteed a victory, while teams starting Russell Wilson probably ended up disappointed in a weak performance in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. If owners want to avoid being disappointed by their quarterback once again in Week 2, they’ll want to avoid playing these three quarterbacks if possible.

Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks

Wilson did record his first-ever 300-yard passing game in Week 1 against the Panthers, and lead the Seahawks to a win, but he was very disappointing from a fantasy standpoint. He only threw one touchdown, and lost a fumble while he was constantly being chased by Carolina’s defense. Marshawn Lynch was virtually a no-show in Seattle’s first game, so the game fell to Wilson’s arm and not his legs, which added to his fantasy value last season.

Wilson will face the San Francisco 49ers this week, who gave up 322 yards in the air to Aaron Rodgers, but he is Aaron Rogers and throwing for over 300 yards is expected. The 49ers have one of the best run defenses in the league, if not the best, so the majority of the work on Seattle’s offense will fall to Wilson’s arm, which isn’t his strength. Expect his rushing total to be down once again, and the Seahawks to only put up seven or 14 points, so going with Michael Vick or Andrew Luck this week would be a better move.

Eli Manning, New York Giants

Manning (the one that didn’t throw seven touchdowns) was the third-highest scorer among quarterbacks in Week 1 in standard Yahoo! fantasy leagues. But even though he threw for 450 yards and four touchdowns, he still threw three interceptions against the Dallas Cowboys. This week against his brother and the Denver Broncos, the Broncos won’t give up 450 yards and four touchdowns, but because of his point totals from last week owners will be jumping on the Eli bandwagon.

The Giants don’t seem to have much of a running game, so New York will have to rely mostly on Eli Manning’s arm to win, which is concerning considering Denver forced Joe Flacco to give up two interceptions and a fumble. Eli Manning isn’t necessarily an every-week fantasy starter but owners need to resist the pull of a four-touchdown game.

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys

This offseason, Romo was one of those quarterbacks that everyone was waiting on until the fifth or sixth round due to the “bad real life quarterback, good fantasy quarterback” argument. Romo did complete 73.5 percent of his passes against the New York Giants in Week 1, but he did give up an interception and padded his fantasy numbers because he threw the ball 49 times and averaged 5.37 yards per pass.

Romo could end up as a top 15 fantasy quarterback this week, but there will be better options out there in standard leagues with Romo going up against the underrated Kansas City Chiefs defense. Yes, the Chiefs beat up on the lowly Jaguars last week but the Chiefs only allowed 107 total passing yards and recorded a shutout (Jacksonville’s only points came on a safety). Pro Bowl corner Brandon Flowers was very impressive, recording four solo tackles and defending two passes. The Cowboys are going to have a down year this season, and even though Romo led Dallas to a win in Week 1, don’t expect to see multiple touchdowns out of him in Week 2.
