Just when it looked like things were trending in the direction of Sam Bradford playing Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, head coach Mike Zimmer ruled the quarterback out on Friday with a knee injury.
This has to be of major concern for the Vikings. Bradford had taken part in practice this week and seemed to be ready to return to the field after missing Week 2's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Considering he suffered the bone bruise on a non-contact injury, there has to be fear that this could be a longer-term injury.
With Bradford out of action, Case Keenum will get the start on Sunday. Not only is he irrelevant from a fantasy perspective against a vastly improved Bucs defense, Stefon Diggs has to be conspired a no-go here. Diggs recorded seven receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns on eight targets with Bradford tossing him the rock in Week 1. He then tallied a 2-27-0 stat line on six targets last week.
We're also expecting a higher usage rate than the Vikes woul like for rookie running back Dalvin Cook, who has gained 191 yards and is averaging 5.6 yards on 34 attempts in his first two NFL games. Should the Sunday outing against Tampa remain close, it would not be a surprise to see Cook see 20-plus touches.
More than anything, it might be time to roster another quarterback as a QB2 option while this whole Bradford situation plays out. It's not to say drop Bradford, just have a contingency plan in place.
