Fantasy Football Week 5: Ranking the Running Backs

1. DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys (HOU)

Murray, who nearly commanded this No. 1 ranking last week, will remain ranked here once again for Week 5. Dallas faces the Houston Texans who have allowed well-over 100-plus rushing yards per week to running backs. Over the first four weeks of the season, Murray has dominated the ground game with amazing force and leads his class in rushing yards and touchdowns.

Expect Murray, who also leads in rushing plays to display another top-notch performance in Week 5, rewarding fantasy owners very generously once again.

Projected Statistics: 130 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards, one touchdown

2. Rashad Jennings, New York Giants (ATL)

Jennings should be on course for a beautiful performance in Week 5 against the Falcons who currently give up the most fantasy points to opposing running backs. So far over four weeks, Atlanta has allowed eight rushing touchdowns to the position and over 800 rushing and receiving yards combined.

Last week Vikings’ Matt Asiata thrashed Atlanta scoring three rushing touchdowns with nearly 100 total yards. Look for a spectacular performance from Jennings on the ground at home against Atlanta.

Projected Statistics: 75 rushing yards, 15 receiving yards, two touchdowns

3. LeVeon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers (JAC)

The Steelers and Bell travel to Jacksonville for their Week 5 game, where fantasy owners should see Bell become completely unleashed against the second-worst ground defense. The Jaguars have allowed one rushing score and over 100 yards per game over this season to opposing running backs. There’s no reason to think that Bell shouldn’t be able to take advantage of this situation and reward high-end RB1 numbers to his owners.

With just one rushing touchdown on the books so far, Bell has an amazing shot to score his second in Week 5 against such a generous defense.

Projected Statistics: 90 rushing yards, 25 receiving yards one touchdown

4. Giovani Bernard, Cincinnati Bengals (NE)

Week 5 presents a rested Bernard a haggard Patriots run defense. Did you see the damage Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis did to New England's secondary in Week 4? The Kansas City duo robbed them of 227 total yards and three touchdowns.

Bernard should be poised for a monster of a game in New England in Week 5. Bernard should have no problem providing fantasy points both from rushing and receiving with at least one score along the way.

Projected Statistics: 50 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards, two touchdowns

5. Matt Forte, Chicago Bears (CAR)

Forte and the Bears travel to face the Carolina Panthers in Week 5, where running backs have had quite the success scoring fantasy points for their owners so far this year. Currently, the Panthers are giving up the 11th most fantasy points to running backs, and have allowed four total touchdowns

Being versed in rushing and receiving, Forte, who cracked another 100-plus yard mark, should be able to force his way through the Panthers’ withering defense and reward his owners with another excellent game.

Projected Statistics: 70 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards, one touchdown

6. LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles (STL)

McCoy, who must do everything he can to recover from two down weeks should find some running room against the St. Louis Rams in Week 5. Playing at home and realizing that the Eagles must get McCoy more involved, should see him making more plays against a Rams defense who has allowed an average of 115 rushing yards per week to opposing running backs.

Look for a rebound week from McCoy who’s got everything to prove and a big “Chip Kelly” on his shoulder while he makes up for lost time.

Projected Statistics: 75 rushing yards, 15 receiving yards, one touchdown

7. Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs (SF)

Thus far, the 49ers haven’t allowed running backs much space and only one rushing touchdown over the first four week of the season. However, Charles is just too darn quick, and skilled to keep contained like the 49ers have do so far to other opposing running backs.

You would have never known that Charles was coming off of an ankle injury the way he waltzed all over the Patriots in his past Monday Night Football matchup. So, Charles’ owners shouldn’t be weary of the tougher matchup he faces in Week 5, as he should still offer solid RB1 fantasy points to his owners.

Projected Statistics 65 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards, one receiving touchdown

8. Matt Asiata, Minnesota Vikings (GB)

Asiata exceeded expectations last week against Atlanta, and now in Week 5, he is pitted up against another quite generous ground defense when the Vikings head to Green Bay for Thursday Night Football.

The Packers have allowed 521 rushing yards and four rush touchdowns to running backs over four weeks. Asiata, therefore should be plenty busy against the NFL’s seventh-worst rush defense. Where Vikings’ quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who dinged up his ankle last week could struggle, look for plenty of hand-off action to come Asiata’s way.

Projected Statistics: 50 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards, one touchdown

9. Khiry Robinson, New Orleans Saints (TB)

Robinson and the Saints face the Buccaneers in Week 5. Currently, Tampa Bay’s defense has allowed 105 rushing plays, nearly 400 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns over four weeks. Being the team’s primary running workhorse, Robinson has a shot at racking up some decent numbers in this desirable Week 5 matchup.

This week just might allow Robinson his second rush score, giving him a boost in fantasy ranking this week.

Projected Statistics: 60 rushing yards, five receiving yards, one touchdown

10. Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks (WSH)

Lynch typically deserves a higher ranking, however he and the Seahawks travel to face Washington in Week 5. If you haven’t taken note, their defense has been exceptionally skilled at preventing opposing running backs from accomplishing any type of ground game the past four weeks.

Where Beastmode should be able to bust out some bigger yardage than other running backs have against Washington, the team has only allowed one rushing touchdown. Lynch will rack up his fair share of yards, but a scoring opportunity might be tight.

Projected Statistics:  70 rushing yards, 15 receiving yards, zero touchdowns
