For the second week in a row, six teams will be on bye. That eliminates such fantasy quarterbacking options such as Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford and Colin Kaepernick. Compound that with the drop-off in fantasy value after the top 10 quarterbacks or sell, and you’re looking at another tough week. But when looking at free agents or potential starters, avoid these three players.
Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons
This is the first week Ryan is actively on this “sit” list, but he hasn’t really given fantasy owners a reason to actively worry, despite losing Julio Jones and having Roddy White hobbled through the first seven games. Ryan is on pace to throw for over 5,000 yards this season, and match his touchdown total from last year, which many people believed to be a career year. He’ll face a serious roadblock this week, however, against the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers are allowing less than 10 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks, and have only given up six passing touchdowns while forcing nine interceptions. Coming off a game where Ryan threw four interceptions against the Arizona Cardinals, that’s bad news for Ryan owners. Expect Carolina to win this game, and win with a dominant defense.
Tom Brady, New England Patriots
Owners are already cold on Brady with his down season through nine weeks, and should really steer away from him this week. There are only four teams to allow less than 12 points per game to quarterbacks, one of which is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who Brady has to play this week. The Steelers are the second best passing defense in the NFL, and Brady has finished two of his last four games with a completion percentage less than 50 percent. Danny Amendola is back, but hasn’t done much on the field, and Rob Gronkowski still doesn’t seem to be 100 percent healthy. Until there are some legitimate (and healthy) receiving threats, owners should look to Andy Dalton or Terrelle Pryor who should be available in 10-team leagues.
Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts
Luck usually makes this list, and he usually proves me wrong. But he’ll be facing an uphill battle this week against the Houston Texans, allowing the eighth fewest points to quarterbacks. Houston doesn’t force many turnovers, but they are only allowing 158 yards per game to quarterbacks. This season, Luck has been an incredibly effective quarterback, but gets most of his fantasy value from touchdowns, although he has two games with zero touchdowns. Don’t expect him to put up the three touchdowns he had in Indy’s last game against the Denver Broncos, and look for an overall decrease in production this year with Reggie Wayne out.
