Fantasy Football Week 9: Start Em'

Josh Freeman, Quarterback, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Freeman has been a top three fantasy quarterback over the course of the last three weeks. Interestingly enough, two of those games came against top-11 pass defenses. Tampa now goes up against a 21st ranked Oakland Raiders defense that has given up 12 touchdown passes and  a 95.3 quarterback rating this season.

Jay Cutler, Quarterback, Chicago Bears

While Cutler isn’t anywhere near a consistent fantasy option, there are times when you need to think of him as a solid QB1. One of those times is this week. Chicago lines up against the 29th ranked pass defense when it plays the Tennessee Titans tomorrow. The Titans’ defense has yielded 17 touchdown passes and a 105 quarterback rating this season.

Joe Flacco, Quarterback, Baltimore Ravens

Flacco is like your bipolar cousin without meds. He will put up great numbers one week and lay a fat egg the following week. You just don’t know what you are going to get from the enigmatic quarterback. Flacco’s Week 9 opponent, the Cleveland Browns, rank 25th in the league against the pass even with the return of Joe Haden from suspension.

Brandon Weeden, Quarterback, Cleveland Browns

Much like Flacco, this rookie quarterback is going up against a pedestrian pass defense. Unlike Flacco, he has been pretty damn good all season long. While Weeden did struggle in horrible weather last week against the San Diego Chargers, he has put up borderline QB1 numbers over the last four weeks, ranking 12th in fantasy points at the quarterback position during that span.

Doug Martin, Running Back, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Even prior to his breakout Week 8 performance against the Minnesota Vikings, Martin had been gradually cementing his status as a RB1 producer. He averaged nearly 128 total yards in each of the previous two games. While Oakland’s defense does rank 11th against the run at just over 100 yards, it is definitely inconsistent. The Miami Dolphins put up 263 and the Denver Broncos against 165 on the ground against the Raiders.

Reggie Bush, Running Back, Miami Dolphins

The self anointed 2012 NFL Rushing Champion has been far from that over the course of the last five game. During that span Bush has averaged 65 yards and under seven fantasy points. That obviously isn’t going to get it done. However, Bush and the Dolphins go up against an Indianapolis Colts rush defense that ranks 27th in the league. They are giving up a touchdown per game as well. Look for Bush to breakthrough here.

Willis McGahee, Running Back, Denver Broncos

Its hard not to like McGahee against the 22nd ranked rush defense in the NFL in the form of the Cincinnati Bengals. He is averaging over 115 rushing yards against three opponent currently ranked in the bottom 10 of the NFL against the run. This seems to indicate that the veteran running back has performed well against poor fronts and bad against solid fronts. Expect the trend to continue this week.

Andre Johnson, Wide Receiver, Houston Texans

Lets just start every single Texan’ skill position player this week. I am pretty sure you would come away with a “W” if that is something you decided to do. The Buffalo Bills have been a downright disaster against both the pass and the rush this season. They are going to look to stop Arian Foster, which will leave single coverage on the outside for Johnson, the 37th ranked fantasy wide receiver thus far this season.

Denarius Moore, Wide Receiver, Oakland Raiders

I am liking Oakland Raiders receivers this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For some reason the stars seem to be aligning for this group. Moore is averaging 77.4 yards and 12.3 fantasy points over the course of the last four games. Definitely solid WR2 numbers.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, Wide Receiver, Oakland Raiders

Even as a secondary option, Heyward-Bey should produce solid WR2 or FLEX numbers against Tampa on Sunday. He has put up an average of nine fantasy points while still attempting to get fully healthy following a serious neck injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3. Look for Palmer to go in his direction early and often.

Torrey Smith, Wide Receiver, Baltimore Ravens

While Smith has struggled in the last three games, it isn’t all his fault. Smith has just nine receptions over the course of the last three games, mainly due to the fact that Flacco hasn’t targeted him a great deal. Expect that to change following the bye and going up against a 25th ranked Cleveland Browns pass defense.

Titus Young, Wide Receiver, Detroit Lions

No, the Lions’ trade for former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Mike Thomas won’t have an impact on Young’s performance. The talented young wide receiver is now Detroit’s No. 2 wide receiver, a position that will likely be his from here on out after the injury to Nate Burleson. Needless to say, you can expect Young to have a solid outing against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Dwayne Allen, Tight End, Indianapolis Colts

I have been on Allen’s jock for some time now, but it seems the rookie tight end is ready to breakout big time. The 2012 third-round pick has been as productive as any tight end in the NFL in terms of receptions percentage. Allen has caught nearly 75 percent of the passes thrown his way this season. Simply put, more targets and Allen is a TE1 option this week against the Miami Dolphins.
