In what will be a weekly feature here, I will breakdown each fantasy football position. In the process, I will focus on which players you should start and which players you should definitely avoid.
Today’s article will take a look at the running back position.
Rashad Jennings, Jacksonville Jaguars
While Maurice Jones-Drew did end his holdout over the weekend, it is foolish to believe that he will be able to make an impact against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. In fact, it is reasonable to assume that Jennings will get the start.
Minnesota ranked outside of the top 10 in terms of rush defense last season, allowing 107 yards per game. Kevin Williams is back and is a major run-stuffing defensive tackle, but the Vikings are going to struggle from a run support aspect at the linebacker position.
Additionally, you can expect this to be a relatively close game. This puts Jennings in line to carry the ball 20 or more times. If that happens, there is no reason to believe that he cannot put up triple-digit yardage totals.
Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks
Lynch might be dealing with back spasms, but the 2011 surprise performer has played through this in the past. Seattle goes up against an Arizona Cardinals rush defense that yielded over 124 yards per game last season.
You can expect Seattle to make Lynch a focal point against Arizona. They are going to be starting a rookie in Russell Wilson at quarterback, which indicates that the running game is going to be huge. They are also favored in the game. This leads me to believe that Seattle will be running the ball a whole heck of a lot on Sunday.
Lynch scored 13 touchdowns on just over 300 touches last season. A solid touch-to-touchdown ratio.
Frank Gore, San Francisco 49ers
Even after adding a ton of weapons in the passing game, San Francisco is definitely going to focus on the running game with the fearsome foursome they have. This could also indicate that Gore won’t see as many touches.
That being said, he will be the focal point against the Green Bay Packers Sunday afternoon. The Packers ranked right in the middle of the pack in rush defense last season, but are going to struggle more in this aspect of the game with Desmond Bishop being lost for the season and B.J. Raji banged up a bit.
Doug Martin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay takes on an underwhelming Carolina Panthers rush defense that yielded a league worst 156 yards on the ground last season. While Luke Kuechly might help out in run support, it is foolish to believe that a rookie linebacker will be able to make that much of an impact.
Martin, a first-round pick in April, is the Buccaneers’ starting running back heading into the regular season. As someone that is solid in pass-protection and receiving, Martin should be on the field a whole heck of a lot.
Additionally, Greg Schiano and the Buccaneers’ new coaching staff is going to be featuring the run a great deal in order to help Josh Freeman out in the passing game. I expect 125 yards and a touchdown from the Boise State product on Sunday.
I will be focusing on which running backs you should sit this afternoon. Also stay tuned for other positions as the week progresses.
