Fantasy Football Week Three: Sit These Three Running Backs

You just don't start running backs against the Houston Texans or San Francisco 49ers unless you a prepared to see your primary ball carrier put up single-digit fantasy points.

This is one of the primary reasons that I am suggesting you sit both Adrian Peterson and Willis McGahee today. Moreover, take a deep breath and seriously consider sitting Darren McFadden, who struggled a great deal against the Miami Dolphins last week. Here is why.

Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings

The San Francisco 49ers have given up an average of 46 yards per game to opposing running backs over the course of their last 18 games. More impressively, they have yielded just one touchdown as teams are averaging 3.5 yards an attempt.

Needless to say, it makes absolutely no sense to start any running back against the 49ers’ defense no matter how good he might be. Peterson is an absolute fantasy stud, but will not make an impact against San Francisco today. You can take that to the bank.

Willis McGahee, Denver Broncos

The Houston Texans are yielding just 144 rushing yards in two games without giving up a touchdown on the ground. They did so against Reggie Bush and Maurice Jones-Drew, pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

While McGahee had a stellar game against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night, I just don’t see him being able to stand up against one of the best front sevens in the National Football League. Heck, one of the top two defenses in the league, right there with the aforementioned 49ers.

Look for the veteran running back to put up less than 50 yards and fail to score a touchdown. Obviously not RB1 numbers. In fact, you should avoid him completely.

Darren McFadden, Oakland Raiders

Run DMC struggled to hit and find holes against the Miami Dolphins last week. He seemed to have lanes to run through, but the vision just wasn’t there if you ask me. He won’t be lucky enough to have as much open field against an elite Pittsburgh Steelers run defense.

Though opposing teams are averaging 92 yards on the ground against Pittsburgh this season, they have a stellar front three in terms of stopping the run. Meanwhile, the Raiders’ zone-blocking scheme just doesn’t seem to be working all too great right now.

These are both indicators that McFadden will struggle this afternoon against Pittsburgh. Having him as a RB2 option in standard leagues is just fine. However, don’t rely on the talented back to be your primary breadwinner on the ground.
