While it might not be too smart to count on rookies in fantasy football, there is something to be said about going with the young guns. Why decide to go with a veteran player that you know what your going to get from him, for better or worst? Instead, take that chance and start someone that could outperform previously set expectations.
This is easier said than done. Whether your playing for money, bragging rights, or some Justin Bieber clay figurine your awkward best friend made as a trophy, you want the bragging rights. Take the guaranteed points and see if you can get surprises elsewhere. That is the conservative strategy.
With all this in mind, take a look at three rookies I suggest you definitely take a look at starting this week.
1. Robert Griffin III, Quarterback, Washington Redskins
Not only is RGIII coming off one of the most impressive rookie debuts for a quarterback in NFL history, he is going up against a St. Louis Rams defense that seemed to over perform last week against the Detroit Lions.
While Cortland Finnegan and Janoris Jenkins are definitely upgrades over what the Rams had last season, they do leave a bit to be desired. Finnegan press at the line and can be beaten deep. If he is tasked with going up against Pierre Garcon, that could be a major issue for St. Louis. Moreover, you simply cannot expect Jenkins to continue the type of play we saw in his debut last week. The enigmatic young cornerback will go through some growing pains, much like what we see from even the best cornerbacks in the league when they were rookies.
I expect RGIII to have a similar performance that he had against the New Orleans Saints last week. It is all upto the Skins’ offensive line giving him time to pass and their running game creating balance on the ground. If those two factors work out in RGIII’s favor, he will have a big day.
2. Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Indianapolis Colts
The Minnesota Vikings gave up 260 passing yards, two touchdowns and a 96.1 quarterback rating to Blaine Gabbert in the season opener. That is not a good sign for a Vikings’ pass defense that struggled a great deal last season.
They are now set to take on another young, but more talented quarterback in Andrew Luck. The 2012 No. 1 overall pick will be making his home debut after turning the ball over four times last week against the Chicago Bears. Luck did, however, put up over 300 yards and a score last week.
You can expect him to be more comfortable under the dome in Indianapolis and going up against what is a lackluster Vikings’ defense. I am expecting some pretty big fantasy numbers from Luck this weekend.
3. Justin Blackmon, Wide Receiver, Jacksonville Jaguars
By far the most productive rookie receiver in the National Football League, Blackmon will be faced with the difficult task of going up against Johnathan Joseph and the Houston Texans. They are much more proven and talented than Minnesota on defense.
That being said, there are other variables that come into play when dissecting who to start and who to sit. Blackmon and the Jaguars will most likely be playing from behind most of the game against Houston. This seems to indicate that the Oklahoma State product will get a bunch of target from Blaine Gabbert in the passing game. In a game that could end up being a blowout, Blackmon will probably put up some stud fantasy numbers.
