While it is pretty clear who you are going to start at quarterback and running back early in the season, especially without any bye week, the wide receiver position is a little less certain. The difference between a top-15 wide receiver and someone ranked outside the initial 25 really isn't that big.
This means that we definitely have to take a look at matchups heading into any given week. This is what I plan to do before we set our lineups tomorrow in the A.M.
Randy Moss, San Francisco 49ers
There is no way that I would have put Moss on a list like this even two months before the start of the season. However, what he has done since joining the 49ers in training camp and in their season opener against the Green Bay Packers is nothing less than extraordinary.
Moss caught four passes and a touchdown in just four targets last week. He still seems to possess both the speed and playmaking ability to keep defenders at bay down the line of scrimmage. This is a respect factor that few in the National Football League have today.
Moss and the 49ers will be going up against a lackluster Detroit Lions secondary that will most likely be missing 75% of its secondary, a unit that was marginal to begin with. I expect an absolutely huge day for the future Hall of Fame in his home opener with San Francisco.
Andre Johnson, Houston Texans
Normally the Jacksonville Jaguars wouldn’t be an ideal opponent for a wide receiver in fantasy football. That was well before Rashean Mathis got old and the Minnesota Vikings had a tremendous amount of success against the Jaguars’ defense last week.
When Christian Ponder and Percy Harvin make your pass defense look bad, you are in trouble. This is magnified when your next opponent is Matt Schaub and the Texans.
I can easily envision Johnson accumulating 150-plus yards and multiple touchdowns. No other way to realistically look at it.
Antonio Brown and Mike Wallace, Pittsburgh Steelers
The concussion suffered by Darrelle Revis is going to have wide-ranging fantasy ramifications. Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson will be the New York Jets two starting cornerbacks Sunday against Pittsburgh. I absolutely love the matchup for both Brown and Wallace here. Originally, I had stated that Brown should be the start with Wallace being a bench candidate. That obviously changed once it became evident Revis was not going to play.
Couple that with the fact that New York doesn’t possess a consistent pass-rush against a week Pittsburgh offensive line and you have the makings for a bit game from the Steelers’ passing game.
Both Brown and Wallace have a chance to reach the 100-yard plateau and go for a score each. Mark that in the book and take it to the house, I am pretty sure they both will be come tomorrow.
Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers
If you have a legit No. 1 or No. 2 wide receiver on your fantasy roster start them EVERY SINGLE time against the New Orleans Saints. It seems that Gregg Williams had it right when he decided to blitz nearly every time over the last couple seasons. In short, New Orleans have nothing in terms of talent in the secondary. They are one of the weakest units in the entire National Footbal League.
Enter into the equation, Cam Newton and Co., who are looking to rebound from a stunningly pedestrian performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.
For his part, Smith still put up some big numbers. He put up seven catches for over 100 yards against a better unit than Carolina will be facing tomorrow. There some concern about Smith’s knee ( listed as questionable), but I have him playing and producing. You should too.
