Following a 47-10 blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints, a game in which the defense nearly 300 rushing yards, the Buffalo Bills made a change at quarterback on Wednesday. The team benched Tyrod Taylor in favor of rookie quarterback Nathan Peterman, who will start on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Given the team entered Week Nine with a 5-3 record and just recently traded for wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, the move comes as a surprise. Taylor played fairly well up to that point in the season with a completion percentage over 65 percent and an 8/2 TD/INT ratio. Given the lack of wide receivers around him, Taylor found ways to put up numbers and keep the offense afloat.
With the change at quarterback, Buffalo will now see what it has in its rookie quarterback. It serves as a white flag for the Bills' 2017 season and could also serve as a small blow to fantasy owners with Benjamin on their rosters. With an unknown at quarterback, Benjamin's fantasy stock now takes an additional hit and could fall outside the top-30 at his position.
A healthy Charles Clay should remain a fantasy option at tight end because of a rookie quarterback's tendency to use tight ends as a security net, but he'll need more volume with the downgrade at quarterback.
Taylor, who the Bills can cut at the end of the season, will almost certainly join the 2018 free agency quarterback class and look to land in a situation more suitable for success and an offense that understands how to help its quarterback succeed.
