Fantasy Impact: Chiefs to Release RB Jamaal Charles

In a less-than-surprising development, the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to release running back Jamaal Charles. It will save the team $6 million against the cap and pretty much hands the Chiefs' starting duties to Spencer Ware, who tallied nearly 1,400 total yards last season.

For his part, Charles has played a grand total of eight games over the past two seasons, rushing for just north of 400 yards during that span. This came on the heels of the former All Pro tallying over 5,000 total yards with 39 touchdowns over the previous three seasons.

With Charles' injury history, it's hard to bank on him being anywhere near a fantasy-relevant option moving forward. Though, he is said to be at 100 percent and could latch on as a primary ball carrier in free agency. It will surely be something to watch during free agency next month.

From a Chiefs perspective, this lends credence to the idea that Ware will be the featured back again in 2017. He gained 1,368 total yards and five touchdowns en route to finishing as the 16th-best fantasy running back last season.
