Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee on Monday. The injury occurred in the first half of Pittsburgh's loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. While Big Ben did return to close out the game, it's readily apparent he wasn't 100 percent.
In terms of just how long Roethlisberger is out, that will depend on the surgery itself. If he undergoes a basic cleaning of the knee, the veteran could be back following the team's Week 8 bye. If he has to go through a full repair of the meniscus, there would be no time frame for the quarterback's return. We won't really know the full extent until after the surgery is conducted.
For the short term, we do know that Roethlisberger is out for next week's game against the New England Patriots. This means that Pittsburgh will have to rely on Le'Veon Bell to make a major impact in the ground game, even more so than when Pittsburgh has its full complement of weapons.
Though, there has to be some concern here for Bell owners. Landry Jones will get the start in Big Ben's stead. Needless to say, he's nowhere near the threat in the passing game. That will likely push more Patriots defenders to the line in order to stop the run. Without the needed holes to run through, Bell's performance could be impacted.
The larger issue here is Antonio Brown. Without his Pro Bowl quarterback under center, Brown's ceiling as a fantasy performer just isn't too high. That's only magnified against a Patriots defense that's done well defending receivers on the season.
With all that said, we really can't come to a full conclusion regarding Roethlisberger's injury until we understand how lon he's going to be out. That will likely come out early this week.
