Fantasy Impact of Brian Hoyer's Injury

Already without Jay Cutler (thumb), the Chicago Bears will now have a decision to make on Brian Hoyer, who is undergoing surgery on Sunday to remain his broken left forearm. Hoyer injured his arm in Thursday's loss to the Green Bay Packers and is expected to miss eight weeks. That's pretty much the remainder fo the season. Matt Barkley will start under center in Chicago until Hoyer is able to turn.

From a fantasy perspective, none of this is good news. First off, prior to Thursday's showing, Hoyer was proving himself to be a solid under-the-radar DFS option. He had put up over 1,300 passing yards with six scores and zero picks in his first four starts of the season.

Based on Hoyer's performance, the likes of Zach Miller and Eddie Royal were becoming relevant fantasy options. Add in Jordan Howard's performance at running back, and the otherwise irrelevant Bears had something to work with in the fake football world.

That's no longer going to be the case. With Barkley starting until Cutler returns, there's absolutely no value in rostering, starting or buying any of the Bears' pass-catching options.

In three-plus NFL seasons, Barkley has thrown zero touchdowns compared to six interceptions in 65 pass attempts. He threw two alone in relief of Hoyer on Thursday night. The former USC product has yet to start a game in his NFL career and has bounced around the league after failing to stick with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Until we see anything of substance from Hoyer. Anything at all. There's absolutely no reason to think the Bears will somehow hit lightning in a bottle here.

This does, however, help Howard at running back. With one of the worst quarterbacks in recent NFL history starting under center, the Bears are more than likely going to rely on the rushing attack. That pushes up Howard's stock a great deal. The rookie has put up nearly 500 total yards and is averaging 4.8 yards per rush in six games this season.
