Fantasy Impact of Dallas Cowboys' Injuries

Neither Jason Witten nor Miles Austin are going to see any more action during the 2012 NFL preseason. For Austin, this means that he will have missed the Dallas Cowboys entire training camp. While Witten could be back by the time Dallas takes on the New York Giants in the season opener, there is nothing that points to an Austin return anytime soon.

This is obviously bad news for the Cowboys, but what does it mean for you're fantasy football team and draft?

I am not going out on a limb by suggesting that you buy low on these two players. In fact, there are some that will ignore them completely. I don't fall under that “ignore at all cost” philosophy, but I am definitely going to be more cautious when it comes to these two Cowboy' players.

My strategy would be to go with a tight end like Vernon Davis or even Aaron Hernandez instead of looking at the aforementioned Witten. I would also recommend that you look at other WR2 options outside of Austin, who had a down 2011 season dealing with a myriad of different injuries. Maybe you pickup his teammate Dez Bryant, who could give you WR1 numbers as a secondary option.

Considering that the Cowboys are lacking at wide receiver, you should see Bryant get a ton of targets until Austin returns. Some will probably buy too high on Bryant simple because of what I indicated above. Don't fall under that trap either. If he ends up available and at position you are comfortable taking him, then do it without much thought. Just don't buy too high on a young wide receiver that has proven himself to be too inconsistent.

Instead, take a look at more consistent WR2 options. Jordy Nelson, Brandon Lloyd and Brandon Marshall come to mind first.

Those are my two cents....do with them what you want.
