The Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets made a blockbuster trade on Friday with New York sending former Pro Bowl defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson to the Seahawks in exchange for wide receiver Jermaine Kearse and a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Fantasy-wise, Kearse the the primary story here. He now joins a Jets team that moved on from Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker during the spring and lost leading returning receiver Quincy Enunwa for the season to a neck injury.
Kearse, 27, is coming off a 2016 campaign that saw him put up 41 receptions for 510 yards and just one touchdown. He also caught just 46 percent of the passes thrown in his direction. It was by far Kearse's worst season since he took on a starting role with the Seahawks back in 2014. In fact, the Washington product caught a combined 87 passes for over 1,200 yards with a splendid 65 percent catch rate in the previous two seasons.
Kearse will now likely be called on to start opposite Robby Anderson for a talent-stricken Jets offense. Though, his fantasy upside is limited a great deal by the presence of Josh McCown under center in New Jersey. We'll want to see how the two connect early on before even coming close to recommending Kearse as a deep bench option in standard 12-team leagues.
