The Los Angeles Rams have finally made that long-awaited move. The team has reportedly benched veteran quarterback Case Keenum in favor of rookie No. 1 pick Jared Goff. This is a move that many have been calling for.
Even after leading his Rams to a win over the New York Jets on Sunday, it became readily apparently over the first nine games of the season that Keenum was not a starter-caliber quarterback in the NFL. In fact, the Rams put up 10 points or less in five of his nine starts. That's bad. That's really bad.
For his part, Keenum threw nine touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions while averaging less than seven yards per pass attempt.
From a fantasy perspective, this had a major impact on Todd Gurley's disastrous start to the season. With teams stacking the box against the run due to the lack of any type of consistent passing attack, last year's breakout star averaged 3.1 yards per rush in the first nine games and is currently on pace to put up less than 1,000 rushing yards on the season.
To put this into perspective, Gurley tallied nearly 1,300 total yards on 13 games as a rookie last season.
At the very least, the presence of Goff should help Gurley a bit on the ground. Despite being a rookie, Goff will likely take more chances down the field. That should force teams to account for the pass more than it had to against Keenum. In the process, boxes won't be stacked against Gurley, meaning he should see more holes to run through.
You are still likely relying on Gurley as a RB1 due to his preseason APD. If that's the case, you can expect a minimal uptick in production during the rest of the season. Whether that will equate to a couple huge games remains to be seen.
