The Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars worked out the first trade of te NFL offseason with Jacksonville sending two-time Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas to the Dolphins in exchange for a seventh-round pick in this year's draft. The trade cannot be made official until the start of the new league year next month.
Thomas, 28, is coming off a disastrous two-year stint with Jacksonville after signing a five-year, $46 million contract back in 2015. However, a change of scenery could do him extremely well here. Remember, he tallied 108 receptions for nearly 1,300 yards with 24 touchdowns in his final two seasons with the Denver Broncos back in 2013-14.
Thomas will now take over for Jordan Cameron as the Dolphins' starting tighte end and should receive a nice boost from Ryan Tannehill, who is a major upgrade over Blake Bortles at the quarterback position.
Dealing with a mixed bag at tight end last season, Tannehill was still able to complete 55 passes while tallying a 70-plus completion mark when targeting tight ends in South Beach. In general, this has been a position he's focused on his career. Back in 2015, Dolphins tight ends went for north of 90 receptions. This followed a 2014 campaign that saw that position put up a combined 92 catches.
If healthy, Thomas should once again find himself as a TE1 option in standard 12-team leagues. Of course, that's all dependent on him actually remaining healthy. The veteran has missed 11 games over the past two seasons.
