EJ Manuel is likely going to be the Buffalo Bills Week 1 starter and hasn't even taken a single preseason snap in the National Football League. We are not sure whether this tells us more about Kevin Kolb, but Manuel has been mighty impressive in camp thus far.
There is now talk that Manuel might be a solid under-the-radar QB2 option in redraft fantasy leagues this season. I have actually gone on record indicating that it wouldn't surprise me if he finishes among the top-16 quarterbacks in fantasy points in 2013.
What does he need to show us today in order to further that idea?
Hook Up With Young Receivers
Manuel needs to find a connection with Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin in this one. Both will be given an opportunity to run with the first team with Stevie Johnson out of with injury. If Manuel is able to find a solid connection with one of these two youngsters, it could go a long way in coming to the conclusion that he'll be able to rely on someone outside of Johnson in the passing game.
Rely on C.J. Spiller
Buffalo's running game is going to be a strength this season, which could limit Manuel's fantasy production. However, I want to see the rookie quarterback work with Spiller on checkdowns when things break down at the line. He needs to rely on the talented running back to act as a last resort, instead of throwing the ball away. If Manuel is able to get the ball to Spiller in space undernearth, it'll only help his yardage totals moving forward. This could be huge.
Progress Through Reads
Most young quarterbacks tend to struggle with this. If their primary receiving option isn't open, they tend to either tuck the ball away and run or throw it away. Considering that Manuel has a strong offensive line in front of him, he doesn't have to worry about doing this too often. He will have the time to progress past his initial read. If that happens, it could mean big things for the quarterback as a rookie.
Put Points on the Board
While fellow rookie Geno Smith looked good in the two-plus possessions that he played Friday, he was unable to lead the New York Jets to any points. It doesn't matter how much a quarterback gains in yardage, if he doesn't put up touchdowns his fantasy value will take a major hit. Who will Manuel rely on in the red zone? Will he be able to use plus athleticism to make plays when protection breaks down inside the opponent's 20? These are two huge things to look for tonight.
