Fantasy Slant: 49ers to Sign QB Brian Hoyer

The San Francisco 49ers are among the most actives teams in the NFL as free agency gets going on Thursday. In addition to making the signings of FB/TE Kyle Juszczyk and wide receiver Pierre Garcon official, the team will sign veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer to a reported two-year, $12 million contract.

Hoyer, 31, was impressive in limited time with the Chicago Bears last season prior to suffering a broken arm in October. In five starts with the team, he completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,445 yards with six touchdowns and zero interceptions. This came on the heels of a 2015 campaign that saw Hoyer throw 19 touchdowns compared to seven interceptions with the Houston Texans.

Hoyer has a history with new 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan with the two working together as members of the Cleveland Browns back in 2014. So he should pick up the nuances of Shanahan's offense relatively quickly.

Contrary to what it might look like, Hoyer is not guaranteed the 49ers' starting job. His base salary of $6 million per season is top-end backup money. San Francisco is still in the mix for Kirk Cousins, who could force his way from Washington in a trade.

We'll surely update this from a fantasy perspective when everything is straightened out in San Francisco. But as of now, it wouldn't be a stretch to call Hoyer a mid-tier QB2 option. His potential presence under center would also make Garcon a viable fantasy option in Shanahan's offense. Again, however, that depends on how everything else plays out an whether San Francisco adds either Terrelle Pryor or Alshon Jeffery in free agency.
