The Houston Texans answered their quarterback situation in a big way on Wednesday by signing former Denver Broncos signal caller Brock Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million contract. Yeah, he's earning $18 million per season having thrown 11 career touchdown passes in four years.
As you can likely imagine above, the sample size really isn't there for Osweiler. He started seven games for the Broncos this past season, recording 1,967 passing yards with 10 touchdowns and just six interceptions. In the seven games that the former second-round pick did start, he put up an above-average fantasy performance just three times. Overall, Osweiler tallied less than 10 fantasy points (FanDuel scoring system) in three of his seven starts.
That's not necessarily too good, especially considering he was working with the likes of Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas at wide receiver.
What's going to be really interesting in Houston is just how Osweiler is utilized. The team replaced Arian Foster with Lamar Miller in free agency on Wednesday. It also boasts one of the top wide receivers in the NFL in the form of DeAndre Hopkins.
Everything seems to be in place for Osweiler to put up some stellar statistical numbers, at least from a fantasy perspective. After all, he did average over 260 passing yards per game in a run-first offense with the Broncos last season.
In a NFL where there are three or four elite-level quarterbacks and about a dozen other potential QB1 options, Osweiler is one of those figures who offers both a high ceiling and a low floor.
While we are going to want to wait and see what else Houston does on offense during the remainder of the season, the book on Osweiler from an ADP perspective has to be a mid-tier QB2 option with bottom-end QB1 upside. Simply put, don't rely on him to be your starter in re-draft leagues.
