Fantasy Slant: Broncos Sign QB Brock Osweiler

This was seemingly bound to happen the entire time. Mere hours after the Cleveland Browns released free agent bust Brock Osweiler, the veteran has signed with his former Denver Broncos team.

After signing a four-year, $72 million deal with the Houston Texans in March of 2016, Osweiler was shipped to the Browns along with a second-round pick in a salary dump this past spring.

Though, after struggling mightily in his only season with the Texans, Osweiler couldn't beat out rookie DeShone Kizer for the Browns' starting job. Heck, he couldn't beat out Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan for the two backup spots for a team that won one game last season.

Despite this, the Broncos and GM John Elway figured he was worth the $800,000 the team is going to pay him this season.

For the Broncos, it adds yet another mediocre arm to go with starter Trevor Siemian and struggling backup Paxton Lynch. Neither were impressive during training camp or the preseason, meaning that there's a chance Osweiler could earn the starting job at some point this season.

As it is, the backfield position in Denver is nothing less than a fantasy black hole. Last season with Houston, Osweiler threw 15 touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions. Meanwhile, the likes of Siemian and Lynch combined for less than 4,000 passing yards.

Add in the presence of injury plagued running backs Jamaal Charles and C.J. Anderson atop the Broncos' depth chart, and this unit will not be relevant in 2017. In fact, we're expecting major regression from both Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders at wide receiver. Adding Osweiler does nothing to change that.
