Fantasy Slant: Calvin Johnson Retires

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson announced his retirement on Tuesday, ending what was a Hall of Fame caliber nine-year career with the team.

He ends his tenure in Detroit as the team's all-time leader in receptions (731), receiving yards (11,619) and receiving touchdowns (83). He does so at the still relatively young age of 30.

It wasn't necessarily a shocking move from Johnson's standpoint, but it does leave a major hole at wide receiver. After all, Johnson has brought in nearly a quarter of Matthew Stafford's completions over the past half decade. With him out of the mix, the Lions are definitely going to need to find another starter-caliber receiver opposite Golden Tate

From a fantasy perspective, Johnson's retirement might be a boon for Tate. Since joining the Lions back in 2014, Tate has put up 199 receptions for 2,141 yards in two seasons. In fact, his 199 receptions are more than Johnson totaled during this span.

We simply have no idea what Tate's ceiling is at this point. He's been targeted an average of 136 times per season since joining the Lions. Is that a number that can increase significantly? If so, will his production increase at the same clip? After all, Johnson himself saw 150-plus targets just four times in his nine-year career. In reality, the number of targets Tate has received in a pass-happy Lions' offense is that of a true No. 1 receiver.

So while others go out there buying Tate as an elite-level fantasy option, it would make sense to avoid taking that reactionary step. That's magnified by the fact that he''s averaging just one touchdown per 27.2 targets since joining the Lions.

The better bet here is that Detroit, who is going to be looking for more balance on offense moving forward, will look for former first-round pick Eric Ebron to step up. The tight end put up 47 receptions for 537 yards and five touchdowns last season. He could be a solid buy-low option.

We won't know the true impact of Johnson's retirement until the Lions' off-season plans are settled. They don't have a starting running back on the roster and are now lacking that true No. 1 receiver. Until the dust is settled here, we won't have a good gauge of where the team's skill-position players stand. What we do know is that the push to make Tate a top-end fantasy receiver should be taken with a grain of salt.
