Fantasy Slant: Colts Claim RB Matt Jones Off Waivers From Redskins

The Indianapolis Colts have claimed running back Matt Jones off waivers from the Washington Redskins after the third-year back was let go by his former team during roster cuts on Saturday.

Jones, 24, will act as Frank Gore's primary backup in Indianapolis after being benched halfway through the 2016 season by Washington due to fumble issues.

Jones started the first seven games of the 2016 season for Washington, putting up 533 total yards and three touchdowns. That came on the heels of a rookie campaign that saw him tally nearly 800 total yards. The issue here has been fumbles, as Jone s has coughed the ball up eight times in 20 career games.

Though, he does now head to a Colts team that simply has no one of substance behind the 34-year-old Gore. If he can hang on to the ball, his presence should limit Gore's fantasy impact. After all, there's a ton of tread on those tires after spending 12 seasons as a primary starter in the NFL.

At the very least, this might push Gore's usage rate down a little. If so, expect regression from his No. 12 fantasy ranking from a season ago.
