It's almost officially official. The New England Patriots likely won't be bringing back tight end Martellus Bennett. This comes after multiple reports indicating that the team has acquired Dwayne Allen from the Indianapolis Colts along with a fourth-round pick in exchange for a sixth rounder.
Allen, 27, is coming off the first year of a four-year, $29.4 million extension he signed with Indianapolis last offseason. He put up just 35 receptions for 406 yards and six touchdowns last year. Allen has yet to play in a full 16-game schedule throughout his five-year NFL career.
It remains to be seen just how much of an impact this will have on Allen's fantasy relevance. We do know that Tom Brady pretty much makes everyone around him better. We also know New England loves to run two tight end sets, meaning Allen will be on the field the same time as Rob Gronkowski.
But in reality, Indy ran two tight end sets with Allen and has a top-end quarterback in the form of Andrew Luck as well.
Allen's best season came back in 2014 when he recorded eight touchdowns.
