The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly re-signed star running back Doug Martin to a five-year, $35 million contract, keeping him off the free-agent market.
Martin, 27, is coming off a 2015 campaign that saw him finish second behind Adrian Peterson with 1,402 rushing yards. He added 271 receiving yards and a total of seven touchdowns en route to finishing as the third-best fantasy running back.
This is likely the best possible outcome for those of you who have invested in Martin when it comes to dynasty and keeper leagues.
He obviously has a comfort level with Tampa Bay's scheme, something that wouldn't have been said if he had signed with another squad. More than this, the Buccaneers offensive line proved itself to be one of the best in the NFL from a run-blocking standpoint last season. Including Martin's 4.9 yards per carry average, Tampa averaged a robust 4.8 yards per attempt in 2015.
With Jameis Winston providing elite-level passing ability under center and a solid group of receivers that include Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson, Martin should again have open running lanes moving forward in Tampa Bay.
While there should be some concern over Martin's struggles in 2013 and 2014 (less than 1,000 combined yards), he automatically remains a top-five fantasy running back heading into 2016.
Then again, you don't need us to tell you just how poorly perceived top fantasy running backs performed last season. It's always going to be a tricky proposition in a NFL that has increasingly become pass first.
