In a long anticipated move, the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly set to release veteran running back Ryan Mathews after two seasons with the team. Mathews was just recently cleared to participate in practice following off-season neck surgery, after which point the Eagles could have decided to move on from him.
That now appears to be the case.
Long an enigma in the fantasy football world, Mathews tallied 1,461 total yards and 16 touchdowns in two seasons with the Eagles. His best performance came with the then San Diego Chargers back in 2011 when the former first-round pick recorded 1,546 total yards en route to earning his first and only Pro Bowl appearance.
With Mathews no longer on the roster, Philadelphia will likely rely on free agent signing LeGarrette Blount to play a huge role at running back. Last season saw Blount put up 18 total touchdowns en route to finishing as the seventh-best fantasy running back. Though, that production from a fake football lens was more of an outlier than anything else. Blount averaged less than four yards per rush and was given ample opportunity in the red zone for a dominant Patriots offense.
We can also expect Darren Sproles to continue playing the role of a PPR stud. Entering his 13th season, Sproles is averaging 53.5 receptions over the past two years.
From a broader perspective, youngsters Wendell Smallwood and Donnell Pumphrey might be given opportunities for touches too. But neither one of them are relevant from a fantasy football perspective.
