Fantasy Slant: Jeremy Maclin to Sign with the Chiefs

Ouch. Jeremy Maclin owners everywhere are looking to sell the 2014 breakout star. Based on multiple media reports, Maclin will sign on with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The former first-round pick couldn't have gone to a worst situation as it relates to his fantasy production. Chiefs receivers didn't record a single touchdown last season with Alex Smith under center. In fact, Smith targeted non-receivers 53 percent of the time last year. Dwayne Bowe, who will likely be released in the coming days, led Kansas City wide receivers with 95 targets last season. For comparison's sake, Maclin boasted an Eagles-high 143 targets in 2014.

This isn't to crack on Smith. Rather, it's all about the Chiefs offensive scheme and what the quarterback does best. As a game manager, Smith likes to spread the ball around. This means that Maclin is unlikely to receive anywhere near the number of targets he saw in Philly last season.

Coming off a 2014 campaign that saw him record 85 receptions for over 1,300 yards with 10 touchdowns, there's no reason to believe Maclin will come anywhere near any of those numbers next year. Once a WR1 option, Maclin's 2015 upside is a bottom-tier WR2,
