The New York Giants acted fast to sign a No. 2 receiver behind Odell Beckham Jr. According to multiple reports, the team has signed recently released former New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall to a two-year, $12 million contract.
Taking out of the equation for a second what an OBJ/Marshall dynamic might look like in the locker room, this surely is an upgrade for the Giants. In reality, Marshall replaces an ineffective Victor Cruz on the outside with last year's rookie sensation Sterling Shepard now taking on a slot role.
The soon-to-be 33-year-old Marshall had a down season with the Jets in 2016, primarily due to what was one of the worst quarterback situations in the NFL. When all was said and done, recorded just 59 receptions for 788 yards and three touchdowns while catching less than 50 percent of the balls thrown in his direction.
With that said, Marshall is just one year removed from putting up 109 receptions for north of 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns. He surely has something left in the tank.
The expectation heading to New York has to be that Marshall will find a way to act as a WR2 option and a perfect secondary receiver for Eli Manning. He might not be as good as that 1,500-yard campaign suggested, but he's surely better than what we saw last year.
None of this really impacts OBJ's fantasy outlook. Though, an argument could be made that Shepard won't see enough targets for an uptick in fantasy relevance as a sophomore in 2017.
