Fantasy Slant: Injury Outlook, NFL Week 9

Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor will play this week after missing the team's past two games with a sprained MCL. Taylor got off to a strong start to the season (70 percent completion, 11 touchdowns and four picks) prior to injuring his knee in Week 5. With Sammy Watkins and LeSean McCoy nearing 100 percent, this should help the Bills overcome recent struggles on offense against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered torn ligaments in his left (non-throwing) thumb last week. Though, it became readily apparent that he was going to be able to go this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. While the injury could cause some ball-security issues, Fitzpatrick is lucky the injury didn't occur to his throwing hand. This shouldn't have much of an impact on him over the short term.

Matt Forte has officially been ruled out for Monday's game against the San Diego Chargers. This means that the Chicago Bears will roll out rookie Jeremy Langford as their starting running back. Expect Langford to perform well against the league's second-worst defense against fantasy running backs. It remains to be seen when Forte will return from the sprained MCL, but it's a multi-week injury.

The San Francisco 49ers remain a hot mess. With Blaine Gabbert getting the start over a benched Colin Kaepernick, the team is in a no-win situation heading into Sunday's game against a vastly superior Atlanta Falcons squad. That's only magnified by injuries to Reggie Bush (out for the season) and Carlos Hyde (week-to-week). It appears that Kendall Gaskins will get the start with recent signing Pierre Thomas backing him up at running back this week. No one on the 49ers' offense is fantasy relevant right now.

With Khiry Robinson lost for the season after suffering a broken right tibia last week, the expectation has to be that C.J. Spiller will receive an increase in touches behind Mark Ingram, especially in the passing game. Going up against a bad Tennessee Titans defense, Spiller could be an under-the-radar FLEX option this week.

New York Jets running back Bilal Powell is unlikely to play this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, meaning that Stevan Ridley will likely be Chris Ivory's primary backup. Though, the obvious expectation here is that Ivory will accumulate a vast majority of the touches in this one.

The same day that Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak named Ronnie Hillman the team's starting running back for a second consecutive week, Hillman himself showed up on the injury report with a thigh issue. While officially questionable to go, Hillman should be able to take the field against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Hillman is a low-end RB2 this week with former starter C.J. Anderson remaining irrelevant from a fantasy lens.

With Le'Veon Bell lost for the season, DeAngelo Williams will take over primary ball carrier duties for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Williams, as a top-end waiver-wire add, should see 20-plus touches on a consistent basis. Considering he was the league's top fantasy running back with Bell sidelined to a suspension in the first two weeks, Williams is now a plug-and-play starter.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Leonard Hankerson will not play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers after missing last week's action with a hamstring injury. Many figured Roddy White would play a larger role on offense last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but that never came to fruition.  He ended up catching two of the three passes thrown in his direction for just 24 yards.

With Steve Smith lost for the season, the Baltimore Ravens wide receiver situation has become a hot mess. Kamar Aiken should act as the team's "No. 1 receiver," but it does appear that Joe Flacco is building strong chemistry with Chris Givens who the team acquired from the St. Louis Rams during the preseason. With Baltimore on a bye this week, Flacco will have time to continue building that relationship.

The Buffalo Bills placed Percy Harvin on season-ending injured reserve Saturday. It's some more bad injury news for a Bills team that handed the injury-plagued receiver $6 million, almost all guaranteed, during the offseason. The good news here is that Sammy Watkins indicated on Friday that he fully expects to go against the Miami Dolphins this week. The second-year receiver has missed three games with a multitude of injuries this season. Chris Hogan (20 catches, 235 yards) and Robert Woods (26 catches, 295 yards) figure to continue playing important roles in the passing game.

Bears wide receiver Eddie Royal will join Forte on the sideline againt San Diego on Monday after he suffered a knee injury last week. This means that Marquess Wilson should play an increased role opposite Alshon Jeffery in a decent Bears passing attack.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Ty Montgomery was downgraded to doubtul for the team's game against the undefeated Carolina Panthers on Sunday. This further limits any real fantasy options against one of the best defenses in the NFL. Though, second-year receiver Davante Adams is now the clear No. 3 guy behind Randall Cobb and James Jones. In his return from an ankle injury last week, Adams caught just one pass on two targets for a whopping eight yards.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton looks to be doubtful for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos. Hilton didn't practice all week with a foot injury, and seems to be out for this important game heading into the Colts' Week 10 bye. Under new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, the expectation here has to be that both Donte Moncrief and Andre Johnson will see added targets. Unfortunately for the Colts, they are going up against the best cornerback group in the NFL. No real fantasy relevance can be had here.

Rookie Miami Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker is doubtful for this week's game against the Buffalo Bills. He hasn't really made much of an impact as a rookie while dealing with injury issue after injury issue. In this, nothing really changes from a fantasy perspective. Jarvis Landry remains the only decent start among Dolphins pass catchers in year-long leagues. Though, up-and-coming receiver Rishard Matthews (33 receptions, 500 yards and four scores) is a nice little target in DFS contests.

Anquan Boldin is doubtful for Sunday's game against the Falcons. This means that Quinton Patton will likely get the start opposite Torrey Smith for the 49ers. Again, nothing to see here.

Vincent Jackson will not play Sunday against the New York Giants. This means that Mike Evans will be a tremendous fantasy play against a Giants team that allowed Drew Brees to tie an NFL record with seven touchdowns last week.

Kendall Wright is a no go for the Tennessee Titans this week. Under new head coach Mike Mularkey, it seems that the team is fully prepared to give Dorial Green-Beckham an extensive look moving forward. Taking on a disastrous Saints defense, the rookie receiver becomes a vastly underrated DFS play.

DeSean Jackson will likely see his first action since suffering a hamstring injury back in Week 1. While the enigmatic receiver is questionable, the expectation here is that he will play. Taking on a high-powered New England Patriots offense that's going to put up a ton of points, Jackson becomes a solid DFS play. He's going to need to see a ton of targets if the Redskins hope to keep pace with Tom Brady and Co.

Breakout Minnesota Vikings rookie Stefon Diggs put a scare into those who have bought stock in him with a hamstring injury this past week. Though, it doesn't appear to be a significant injury, and Diggs is said to be probable for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. While there should be some concern over a receiver dealing with a hamstring injury, Diggs remains a solid DFS play. He's recorded 25 receptions for 419 yards and two touchdowns in his first four NFL games after being an inactive in the first three weeks of the season.

Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall is dealing with injuries to his ankle and toe, but is expected to play against Jacksonville this week. Going up against a Jaguars defense that has yielded the eighth-most yards to quarterbacks, Marshall remains a solid play. Marshall is on pace for 114 receptions, 1,568 yards and nine scores on the year.

Now that Keenan Allen (kidney) is lost for the season, both Steve Johnson and Malcom Floyd become decent fantasy plays in the San Diego Chargers pass-happy offense. Weeks removed from suffering a hamstring injury, Johnson seems to be near 100 percent. Going up against a pedestrian Chicago Bears pass defense, he's an under-the-radar DFS play.

With Ladarius Green (ankle) unlikely to go against the Bears, Antonio Gates will likely receive an increase in targets. That's only magnified by the season-ending injury to Allen. Though, Gates himself has been dealing with a sprained MCL — an injury that saw him miss San Diego's loss to the Oakland Raiders in Week 7.
