In a move that can't be considered too surprising, the Jacksonville Jaguars have benched starting quarterback Blake Bortles for their game against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.
It's interesting in that the third preseason game is usually when starters play up to three quarters. In this, it seems that Chad Henne will be the team's Week 1 regular season starter.
Bortles has finished as a top-10 fantasy quarterback each of the past two seasons, so there's definitely relevance to this from a fake football aspect.
But the fourth-year pro has struggled significantly with mistakes throughout his career. A top-three pick from Central Florida back in 2014, Bortles has thrown a whopping 51 interceptions in three NFL seasons.
It also seems to be readily apparent that the quarterback has regressed during the summer, last week's atrocious performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers being a prime example of this.
Jacksonville picked up the $19 million 2018 option on Bortles' rookie contract, meaning the team could very well decide to have him bench warm throughout the 2017 season. Much like Robert Griffin III with Washington years back, if Bortles were injured, that option would become guaranteed.
Now that the limited Henne looks to be Jacksonville's starter, we can expect rookie running back Leonard Fournette to take on a larger role. That could be a boon for his fantasy relevance this season.
