Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a stunner of a trade earlier this week, sending Nick Foles and a pick to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford. While it remains to be seen whether Bradford will actually remain in Philadelphia, we can assume that Kelly and company have long-term plans for him.
Let's check in on both the long-term and short-term fantasy implications of Bradford heading to Philadelphia.
With DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews now on board at running back, Philadelphia can go to a run-based spread attack, something that Kelly succeeded with a great deal at Oregon.
What's interesting here is that Bradford ran this same type of scheme with Murray in the backfield with him at Oklahoma. He's accustomed to getting rid of the ball quick, using short drops, and hitting on intermediate routes. He was also successful in this scheme.
Philadelphia will have to add talent at wide receiver if it wants the passing game to be successful under Bradford. Jordan Matthews may very well be a good young receiver, but he's not a go-to-guy. Outside of that, the Eagles don't have much. Riley Cooper has bottomed out as nothing more than a No. 3 receiver in the NFL. Meanwhile, Josh Huff has yet to prove his worth as a NFL-caliber receiver.
Despite boasting a great young tight end in Zach Ertz, the Eagles need to add two more rotational receivers for this entire thing to work.
That's where Bradford's fantasy value will either take a hit or see a solid increase in the coming months.
More than that, Kelly's system is quarterback friendly. Look what he did with Nick Foles in 2013 and Mark Sanchez last year. In this, it's highly unlikely that Bradford will struggle from a fantasy perspective on his new team.
While we might want to wait until the rest of the offseason plays out, there's a strong possibility that Bradford will be a top-12 fantasy quarterback in standard leagues next year. If you're conducting a re-draft in the coming weeks, pencil him in as a late-round QB1 option. That's pretty much where Bradford will be when the 2015 season comes calling.
