Fantasy Slant: San Diego Chargers Sign James Jones

With Stevie Johnson now out after suffering a torn meniscus earlier this week, the San Diego Chargers have pounced on the watered-down free agent market for a veteran replacement. The team reportedly signed former Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders wide receiver James Jones on Tuesday.

Jones, 32, recorded 50 receptions for 890 yards and eight scores for Green Bay last season. That was good enough for him to finish as the 26th-best fantasy receiver. Though, it's also important to note that Jones caught just 50 percent of the passes thrown in his direction. Not a good sign with Aaron Rodgers under center.

Jones will likely slot in behind Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin as San Diego's third receiver until Johnson is able to return. Considering Philip Rivers led the NFL in both completions and attempts a season ago, there should be more than enough targets to go around here.

With that said, Jones isn't an option in standard 12-team leagues. He's someone you keep an eye on as it relates to the waiver wire, only picking up should he take on a more central role in the offense as the season goes on.

Jones' best performance came back in 2012 with the Packers when he led the NFL with 14 touchdowns. And in reality, that's where his value might be. He's tallied 38 touchdowns over the past five seasons. More than anything, DFS might be the way to go with him if you see that he's trending in the right direction during the season.
