Grading the Cleveland Browns 2013 Draft

The Cleveland Browns came into the 2013 NFL Draft with a new owner, general manager and head coach looking to put their mark on this team and (hopefully) finally turn a corner with an ever-struggling franchise.

Well, maybe next year?  So far all I’m seeing is the same ol’ Browns here.  They traded their fourth and fifth round picks this year for third and fourth rounders, respectively, next year.  That left them with just a first, third, sixth and two seventh rounders this year because of the second-round pick they surrendered in the supplemental draft for receiver Josh Gordon.  Besides that, they didn’t do a great job of getting the best value possible with the picks they still had.

So, with that in mind; let’s take a look at each of the Browns’ five picks in the 2013 NFL draft.

First Round, Sixth Pick: Barkevious Mingo - Defensive End, LSU

I may be in the minority here, but I really dislike this pick.  There’s no arguing with the insane amount of potential that Mingo possesses but I’m more of a production kind of guy, especially in the top five.  The Browns are pretty set at defensive end currently, and could’ve completely solidified their secondary (and defense) by adding a player like Dee Milliner or Kenny Vaccaro here.  Instead they took a guy that will need a few years to develop before he’ll be able to make a big impact.  Grade: C+

Third Round, 68th Pick: Leon McFadden - Cornerback, San Diego State

Obviously, like I said above, the Browns could really use another talented corner to pair with Joe Haden and solidify their secondary.  Well they got a corner here, but really whiffed on value considering all of the uber-talented cornerbacks that were still available.  Grade: C

Sixth Round, 175th Pick: Janoris Slaughter - Safety, Notre Dame

Along with cornerback, adding a quality safety to the mix would’ve completely solidified Cleveland's defense.  By giving up their fourth and fifth round picks, the Browns missed out on a ton of talented safeties.  Slaughter isn’t anything to write home about, but he has some potential.  They could’ve gotten much better value with Bacarri Rambo here.  Grade: B-

Seventh Round, 217th Pick: Armonty Bryant - Defensive End, Central Oklahoma

Literally the only thing I know about this guy is that he was once arrested at practice for selling drugs.  Taking someone with obvious character issues like that, at a position we’ve already deemed not a need is just stupid.  Another waste of a pick with some talented players still on the board.  Grade: D

Seventh Round, 227th Pick: Garrett Gilkey - Offensive Tackle, Chadron State

Offensive line depth wasn’t a huge need here, but if they wanted to go that route, why not Reid Fragel? Grade: C-

Final Grade: C (73.8 Percent)
