The Chiefs finished 9-7 in 2014, missing out on the playoffs due to the tough competition in the AFC. The West continues to be a stacked division full of talent and teams vying for a playoff run. While the Chiefs didn’t have many areas of need, they had a solid draft, using their picks to build off of their recent success as they look to the future. Here’s a quick look at the Chiefs 015 draft.
Draft Picks
Round 1 Pick 18: Marcus Peters, CB, Washington
Round 2 Pick 49: Mitch Morse, G, Missouri
Round 3 Pick 76: Chris Conley, WR, Georgia
Round 3 Pick 98: Steve Nelson, CB, Oregon State
Round 4 Pick 118: Ramik Wilson, LB, Georgia
Round 5 Pick 172: D.J. Alexander, LB, Oregon State
Round 5 Pick 173: James O’Shaughnessy, TE, Illinois State
Round 6 Pick 217: Rakeem Nunez-Roches, DT, Southern Miss
Round 7 Pick 233: Da’Ron Brown, WR, Northern Illinois
Best Pick: Marcus Peters, CB, Washington
Put aside some questions regarding Peters’ attitude, and he has the potential to greatly improve the Chiefs already solid defense. Peter’s was one of the top corners in the draft, and while his character is a concern, head coach Andy Reid has success in coaching these types of players and steering them to the right path in the NFL.
If Peters can make attitude adjustments and not let that hinder his play, the Chiefs may have gotten one of the best overall in this year’s draft class.
Area of Concern:
Well, Peters attitude and character moving forward is a big concern for this team. Not only could it affect his play, but cause locker room troubles as well. He had issues with Washington’s coaching staff which led to his dismissal from the team.
They drafted a few wide receivers, but that is still a concern as the season approaches. They added Jeremy Maclin, but the fact that the receiving core didn’t have a touchdown reception last year is alarming.
Biggest Improvement: Defense
The Chiefs already have a good defense that was ranked high last season, but after this draft they have gotten even better. They were ranked seventh in total team defense in 2014, and continue to build a defense capable of remaining strong for years to come.
Grade: B-
The Chiefs had a relatively average draft, taking players to improve their defense, while also selecting a few to work toward the future and provide depth on the offensive side. KC’s draft selections are all athletic players, which is of high value. There are some character concerns, but putting that aside, the Chiefs had a solid draft.
