Name: Jadeveon Clowney
Position: Defensive End
School: South Carolina
There may be no other NFL Draft prospect that has as many positive and negatives opinions about him thrown around. Well maybe other than Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. As some will say that he shows signs of having no interest in playing the game of football, watching his film Clowney is the best player on the field. There are still 48 days until the NFL Draft but the clock is ticking and the Texans are on the clock.
How Jadeveon Clowney Meets Team Needs
Without question the Houston Texans are in desperate need of a quarterback. However, if you have an opportunity to grab a player the caliber of Clowney, the team must take that into consideration. Outside of J.J. Watt, the team lacks a better than average pass rusher. He could be considered at the outside linebacker position because most players who play the 5 technique in a 3-4 scheme don't make a huge impact in the pass rushing game, unless you are Watt.
Impact As A Rookie
Clowney is a plug and play guy. As you would expect for a guy as highly regarded as Clowney is. Much as Sheldon Richardson did a season ago, Clowney is most likely to be the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Clowney will wreak havoc on opposing offenses for years to come. Should expect close to double digit sacks and tackles for loss in his rookie season. He could make Watt an even better player in 2014 if that is at all possible.
What Jadeveon Clowney Does Well
As dominant of a pass rusher as Clowney is, the best part of his game may just be Clowney's run defense. Unlike many other defensive ends at the NCAA level, Clowney uses his hands and upper body strength to his advantage. It is hard for an opposing offensive linemen to get this hands on Clowney with all of the hand fighting that he does so well. When you match his power, technique and speed you get the most dynamic pass rusher in the draft.
What Jadeveon Clowney Struggles With
The hardest thing to do with Clowney and studying him on tape is trying to find holes in his game. However, when you take a look at the scheme that Houston ran a season ago there are aspects of it that may pose a problem for him. Pass coverage is required at times for an outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme. The concern with Clowney is more that he didn't have as much expierence as one would have hoped in coverage. In those types of situations, just stick him on the line and let him pin his ears back.
