As many of thse who regularly listen to eDraft Sports Radio or Football Debate Central as well as read my articles on a consistent basis know, I am not a huge fan of second-year running back David Wilson, who seemed to be going much higher than his projected statistics indicated prior to recent events.
That might have changed with the news that Andre Brown, who was slated to share carries with Wilson with the New York Giants, is out four-to-six weeks with a broken leg.
This gives Wilson at least a month to prove that he can shoulder the load for Tom Coughlin and Co.
Wilson attempted just 71 rushes last season, but did average five yards per rush. He has the athletic ability and upside to be a true RB1 this season. The issue with Wilson is that he has struggled with anticipatory skills and field vision. Instead of utilizing that elite athletic ability, the former Virginia Tech standout tends to dance his way in the backfield way too much.
If Wilson has improved on that aspect of his game, he could be a solid under-the-radar RB1 option this year. If preseason is any indication, the youngster seems to have picked his game up a bit. He put up 179 yards and just 24 rushes in four games this summer.
Considering that the Giants don't have many options outside of Wilson, you can expect him to get a vast majority of their early-season rushes.
They averaged nearly 26 attempts per game last season. If Wilson can come even close to duplicating his per rush average (say 4.5 yards), he's primed to break out big time.
Brown's injury cemented that.
