How Free Agency Changes NFC South Draft Needs

Atlanta Falcons

Signed: G, Jon Asamoah; DE, Tyson Jackson; DT, Paul Soliai.

Asamoah is a solid guard and was a good pick-up by the Falcons during the first wave of free agency.  Jackson and Soliai add a lot of presence on the defensive line but they fail to address any glaring need.  While Jackson is a defensive end,  the former third-overall pick is more of a run stuffer than a pass rusher.

Drafting sixth overall,  the Falcons’ draft board will not have changed at the top as they will still be pondering a trade up for Jadeveon Clowney or staying put and selecting an offensive tackle such as Jake Matthews or other edge rushers in the shape of Khalil Mack and Anthony Barr.

Carolina Panthers

Signed: SS, Roman Harper; TE, Mike McNeill.

They say do not panic at the start of free agency but I think Panthers fans have reason to be worried at how the first week has gone. Two players signed while seven players have left including four wide receivers - which was a glaring team need to begin with.

With the 2014 NFL Draft presenting the deepest wide receiver class in recent memory and a defensive back group,  the Panthers can be patient on draft day and get maximum value for their needs in the first two rounds.  The retirement of Jordan Gross also opens up another problem at offensive tackle.

New Orleans Saints

Signed: S, Jairus Byrd.

The Saints upgraded at the safety position by bringing in one of the best in the business.  However,  losing Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper leaves the position a bit thin and could be a bigger need than it was before free agency.

Cornerback and outside linebacker also failed to be addressed and will be top of the shopping list come May.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Signed: T, Anthony Collins; G, Oniel Cousins; C, Evan Dietrich-Smith; MLB, Dane Fletcher; DE, Michael Johnson; QB, Josh McCown; DT, Clinton McDonald; TE, Brandon Myers; CB, Alterraun Verner.

Tha Bucs’ added no less than nine players in the first six days of free agency with four to five of those starters and the rest solid contributors.

Anthony Collins will start at tackle but I would not be surprised to see another selected during the first couple of rounds in the draft.  Johnson and McDonald add an extra dimension to an already impressive young defense.  Verner is not Derrelle Revis but he is a very good player and immediately fills a void.  Another quarterback may be brought in to compete with McCown and Mike Glennon.  Ultimately,  I think the first round pick could be traded back a few spots for wide receiver value or used on a pass rusher such as Barr.
