Less than 24 hours before the thick of semi-final fantasy playoff action kicks off, Chris Mortensen delivered a blow to thousands of fantasy owners on Friday night. Running back Leonard Fournette, who didn't practice this week due to a quad injury, will not play in Week 15 against the Houston Texans.
Fournette, who also dealt with an ankle injury throughout the season, expressed skepticism earlier this week about his status and indicated his participation in practice on Friday would ultimately play a big role in determining his status for Sunday's game. He never made it onto the practice field Friday and just a day later, the team has now ruled him out.
It serves as a mammoth blow for fantasy owners who reached it this far in the playoffs in part because of the rookie running back's success this season. In 11 games, Fournette rushed for 923 yards, eight touchdowns and contributed 213 yards and a touchdown through his work as a pass-catching back. Fournette also would have seen a great opportunity to rack up the fantasy points given Jacksonville is a strong favorite and Houston's defense is weak.
Now, Jacksonville will rely on the tandem of Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon. If you want a safe play who will see goal line touches, Ivory is the choice for you. But we've seen Yeldon shine this season when Fournette missed a game, with no game standing out more than his 137-yard performance against the Indianapolis Colts. Yeldon is productive catching passes out of the backfield and offers some big-play ability, so he is the risk/reward option if you're feeling risky.
