Jim Tomsula Won't Commit to Colin Kaepernick as 49ers Starter

The San Francisco 49ers disastrous 2015 season hit a new low on Sunday, as the team fell to the St. Louis Rams by the score of 27-6. It was San Francisco's sixth loss in its past seven games — four of them coming with the team scoring single-digit points.

Following the loss, first-year head coach Jim Tomsula indicated that everything remains on the table as it relates to his players moving forward this season:

It's a change from Tomsula continually supporting Colin Kaepernick through the quarterback's struggles earlier in the season. It could also be an indication that San Francisco is considering benching Kaepernick in favor of Blaine Gabbert

This definitely sounds like the 49ers are definitely willing to place most of the blame on their much-maligned signal caller. And while Kaepernick has regressed a great deal this season, it's foolish to believe he's solely to blame for the team's disastrous first half.

Kaepernick has thrown just six touchdowns in five games and is leading the league's 32nd-ranked scoring offense. He's also been sacked a whopping 28 times and seen pressure in his face more than 40 percent of the time he's dropped back to pass on the year. Thinking that a less mobile quarterback in Gabbert would have success behind this offensive line is utterly foolish.

Then, you have the entire point of Kaepernick's contract beyond the 2015 season. It's guaranteed for injury only — further indication that San Francisco may bench the quarterback in order to avoid him being injured behind that offensive line. It would be a way to move on from Kaepernick following the 2015 season without a financial commitment.
