Now that Josh Freeman has finally been freed from the hellish experience of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he joins a talented offense with the Minnesota Vikings who boast the best running back in the NFL in the form of Adrian Peterson.
Minnesota's pass catchers might not be as proven as what Freeman had in Tampa Bay, namely Vincent Jackson, but its unit offers much more upside. In addition, Freeman now has a true franchise left tackle in Matt Kalil to help protect his blindside for the foreseeable future.
While the now veteran quarterback has struggled a great deal over the past two-plus seasons (50 turnovers last 34 starts), he was a top-tier QB2 last season with Tampa Bay. Freeman collected over 4,000 passing yards and 27 touchdowns while putting up numbers that were good enough for him to be the 13th-ranked fantasy quarterback.
His major issues have been attempting to force the ball when a window hasn't opened up. This is where a vast majority of his interceptions have come since a breakout 2010 campaign. With Peterson in the backfield in Minnesota, Freeman shouldn't have to worry about forcing the issue down field. Instead, he's going to be able to take what's there simply because defenses will have to plan against AP and the Vikings run game.
While this will likely limit the amount of yards Freeman puts up, his turnover total will go down dramatically.
With defenses still being forced to throw seven or eight in the box against Peterson, the Vikings will be able to go down the field to their young group of receivers. Rookie first-round pick Cordarrelle Patterson is yet to make an impact thus far this season. He has just eight catches for 85 yards and has been targeted a total of 11 times in five games. Despite this, the Vikings appear ready to get him more reps starting this week.
That could add another dimension to a passing game that has completed the least amount of 20-plus yard passes. Second-year receiver Jarius Wright is yet another young receiver with tremendous upside. Much like Patterson, he hasn't been given the necessary reps to make a huge impact.
The two Vikings' receivers who have performed well through six weeks are veterans Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson, who have combined for 43 receptions and over 650 yards. For his part, Simpson has been a solid down-field threat (16.2 yards per reception). Considering Freeman's strong arm and ability to look down the field, Simpson could make an even stronger impact moving forward.
One of the primary things that plagued Freeman in Tampa Bay was the lack of a receiving option from the tight end position. It's not a coincidence that Freeman's product dropped off dramatically after Kellen Winslow departed prior to the start of the 2012 season.
This is where Kyle Rudolph comes into play. While the young tight end possesses one of the highest upsides at that position in the NFL and displays great hands, Ponder struggled getting the ball to him on a consistent basis. The Notre Dame product tallied an average of just six targets per game in the Vikings' first five outings. That will change with Freeman under center and will help the signal caller's comfort level early in his Vikings' career.
These are all indicators that Freeman should have enough skill-position players around him to make a strong fantasy impact out of the gate with Minnesota.
Then you have level of competition...
Fantasy Defenses, Remaining Schedule (vs Quarterbacks) | Week | Opponent | FF Rank | Weekly AVGs | PPG |
| 7 | New York (G) | 31st | 303.4 yards, 2.5 TDs | 23.55 |
| 8 | Green Bay | 25th | 320.4 yards, 2.6 TDs | 20.79 |
| 9 | Dallas | 32nd | 351.3 yards, 2.5 TDs | 24.39 |
| 10 | Washington | 23rd | 304.4 yards, 2.2 TDs | 20.26 |
| 11 | Seattle | 3rd | 236.5 yards, 0.8 TDs | 12.73 |
| 12 | Green Bay | 25th | 320.4 yards, 2.6 TDs | 20.79 |
| 13 | Chicago | 14th | 286.2 yards, 1.7 TDs | 16.28 |
| 14 | Baltimore | 16th | 285.2 yards, 1.7 TDs | 17.40 |
| 15 | Philadelphia | 29th | 342.5 yards, 2.2 TDs | 22.27 |
| 16 | Cincinnati | 13th | 248.2 yards, 1.5 TDs | 15.79 |
| 17 | Detroit | 12th | 294.5 yards, 1.2 TDs | 15.19 |
As you can see above, Minnesota goes up against one team that possesses a top-10 defense against fantasy quarterbacks. That's going to be a difficult task, but outside of the Seahawks' game, it appears that Minnesota is sitting pretty here. Freeman will have the honor of playing six games against defenses that rank in the bottom 10 of the NFL versus fantasy signal callers, including games against the two-worst units in the NFL in that category.
If you were hit by an injury bug or didn't anticipate the struggles we have seen from the likes of Tom Brady and Colin Kaepernick, Freeman could really save your season. He possesses QB1 upside in at least half of his remaining games, and legit top-tier QB2 upside in all but one of his remaining outings.
Not too bad for someone that was exiled to a luxury sweet in Tampa just a few weeks back.
Dynasty Impact
Considering that Minnesota signed Freeman to a two-year deal, its ready to give him the keys and run with it. Add into account the likely trade or release of Christian Ponder and there is no reason to believe that Freeman won't be starting for the Vikings in 2014.
If so, his dynasty upside is pretty darn high.
We are likely looking at a strong QB1 option for those who utilize the late-round quarterback strategy. Freeman's best single-season fantasy performance came in 2010 when he finished seventh overall among quarterbacks in points. He put up over 3,800 yards with 25 touchdowns compared to just six interceptions.
The existence of Peterson in the backfield and likely progression from Wright as well as Patterson bodes well for Freeman beyond 2013. If he is able to improve on the aspects of the game that forced him out in Tampa Bay, Freeman could be a steal in dynasty leagues.
