Key Fantasy Performances from Broncos-Chiefs

It's not often you get a Thursday Night Football game with an exciting finish, but the Denver Broncos-Kansas City Chiefs game provided exactly that. The game also provided some excellent narratives and ideas about both quarterbacks and head coaches, which made it even more entertaining.

From a fantasy perspective, this was really a mixed bag depending on who you had in your lineup. In a game with three interceptions, three lost fumbles and seven sacks, some fantasy owners had to walk away with a big smile on their face, while others are left questioning why they even play fantasy sports.

Peyton Manning, Quarterback, Denver Broncos

First things first, Manning is not the quarterback of old, his best days are long behind him. Maybe his arm strength isn't as bad as we thought and having a new head coach has made Manning and his receivers adjust and must work on their timing. But there are still a lot of throws he are making that are not pretty, he threw plenty of ducks and the Chiefs dropped three interceptions.

Manning will still put up some numbers, especially if Gary Kubiak lets him take more control of the offense. The deep ball has no touch on, just a heave down the field and Manning struggles even more to make throws when forced out of the pocket. From a fantasy perspective, Manning is no longer a top-10 fantasy quarterback, he is a matchup based play.

C.J. Anderson, Running Back, Denver Broncos

There will be plenty of fantasy owners with Anderson on the roster ready to freak out and dump him for whatever they can get back. Normally this would be an excellent buy-low opportunity for other fantasy owners, but it's hard to trust Anderson when the Broncos' offensive line is so dreadful. Anderson broke off a 14-yard run to start the game, then finished with 12 carries for 27 yards. This offensive line can't create holes for Anderson and with defenders getting into the backfield, Anderson has little chance to put up strong numbers.

Emmanuel Sanders, Wide Receiver, Denver Broncos

Manning's physical talent may be in apparent decline, but he still has the ability to get Sanders the ball. When the Broncos were facing a third-down situation, Manning got the ball to Sanders. On the night, Sanders finished with eight receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns. He toasted Jamell Fleming all night and showed why he will still be a monster in PPR leagues this season.

Demaryius Thomas, Wide Receiver, Denver Broncos

Anyone with Thomas in their lineup had to be concerned until the final minutes of the game. He had just 62 yards as the Broncos began their final drive, but came through in the clutch with 54 yards on three receptions. Thomas may become Manning's second option in the passing game and a lack of big plays is concerning, but he will still see plenty of targets and is a must in your lineups most weeks.

Alex Smith, Quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs

Smith came into the game with six interceptions and zero touchdown passes to wide receivers in the past year. On Thursday, one of those numbers increased and it wasn't the touchdownless streak for Chiefs' wide receivers. Smith did not look sharp, completing just 16 of 25 passes with an interception in the red-zone and another coming when Kansas City was backed up inside their own 20. There is plenty of talent on this offense but it will be up to Andy Reid and Smith to actually take advantage of it.

Jamaal Charles, Running Back, Kansas City Chiefs

Oh, what a night fantasy owners with Charles on the roster must have had. On the positive end, he finished with 125 rushing yards and a touchdown, an excellent game against the Broncos' defense. But three plays will stick in the mind of anyone who started Charles, his two fumbles and Knile Davis untouched eight-yard touchdown run. There are at least 11 point Charles left on the board, points that could come back to cost many fantasy owners their matchup.

Travis Kelce, Tight End, Kansas City Chiefs

Raise your hand if you were telling Andy Reid through your television that Kelce wasn't getting the ball enough. When you have a player as gifted as Kelce, arguably the closest thing to Rob Gronkowski there is, you need to throw him the football in any way possible, even when he is covered. On the five targets Kelce saw against the Broncos, they mostly came when the window was open. He finished with four receptions for 58 yards, a disappointing performance considering what he is capable of. Fantasy owners just have to hope the coaching staff and Smith wise up and start getting him the ball more.
