Kirk Cousins Has Interesting Take on His Turnovers This Season

There is drama unfolding around the Washington Redskins quarterback situation — drama that has existed within the organization for the better part of the past three years.

This time, it's people calling for the Redskins to bench struggling starter Kirk Cousins for either Colt McCoy or even Robert Griffin III

While still among the most turnover-prone quarterbacks in the NFL, Cousins seems to think his turnovers this season are much different than they were last year when he gave the ball up 11 times in six games:

"I don't feel like the turnovers this year have been quite as awful as they were last year," Cousins told 106.7 The Fan (h/t CBS Sports). "Some of the interceptions I threw last year were just very poor reads, very poor throws, very poor decisions, and while some of the interceptions this year have been that, I don't think it's been quite as many."

Through six games this season, Cousins turned the ball over eight times (all interceptions). He boasts the sixth-highest interception rate in the NFL and is on pace to throw 21 picks.

Knowing full well that Cousins was attempting to explain away his mistakes as being less "awful" than last season, we understand that all turnovers can't be weighted the same. After all, an interception deep in your own end or when driving inside the opponents 20 can be far more damaging than mistakes around mid-field. In this, Cousins has a point. He also decided to focus on poor decisions from a season ago compared to this year.

The bottom line is that Cousins isn't playing starter-caliber football right now. And attempting to explain away his struggles isn't going to make him any more popular within what is quickly becoming a frustrated fan base.

We also know that head coch Jay Gruden has thrown his full support Cousins' way. The former Michigan State star was given the keys to the offense for the entire season heading into Week 1. And for his part, Gruden has not strayed away from that after six games.

While going back to RGIII seems to be unrealistic considering his relationship with Gruden, the Redskins might be best served actually going with McCoy moving forward. Simply put, Cousins isn't the answer here. The longer Gruden refuses to understand this, the shorter his leash becomes in D.C. And the longer Cousins continues to make excuses, the less confidence fans are going to have in him.
