Late last week it was reported by the always reliable TMZ that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was being investigated by the Miami Police Department for sexual assault. The situation involved a woman who had been drinking a substantial amount of alcohol, 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton, and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette.

More and more information is coming out about the investigation everyday and the latest is that Miami police do not believe Kaepernick was even in the room when they responded to two 911 calls about an upset, naked woman refusing to leave a downtown Miami hotel room. The hotel room this woman was visiting belonged to Kaepernick. The police are waiting on the hotel to turn over more surveillance tape to determine whether he had been at the hotel earlier with the two other players.

Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa said that, so far, police have not confirmed the woman’s report that Kaepernick had been among a trio of men in the hotel room on the night of April 1. She named him in a report she filed with police two days after the incident.

Kaepernick has handled himself with nothing but class in his short professional career. Despite what some media outlets might have you believe, he isn’t a “thug” and isn’t selfish at all. In a lot of ways he is quite selfless, especially with the work he does with the charity Camp Taylor. The 49ers quarterback spoke out against TMZ and other outlets on Twitter last week, saying he did nothing wrong.

So what does all this mean going forward? For one, the 49ers have put a hold on contract extension talks with Kaepernick while Miami police continue its investigation. Mike Garafolo, NFL Insider for Fox Sports 1, reported Friday that the contract talks wouldn’t be paused for long, just for now out of respect for the investigation. I don’t expect this investigation to be dragged out for any considerable amount of time, mainly because the woman involved hasn’t claimed she was sexually assaulted. She had too much to drink, claimed she smoked marijuana that night as well, blacked out, and didn’t remember anything. After waking up in a hospital bed, she went to the cops and asked them to investigate. I expect this to pass over quickly, but hopefully it does so without tarnishing Kaepernick’s reputation.
