Love/Hate For Top Rounds in Your Fantasy Football Draft

With Matthew Berry releasing his Love/Hate for the 2012 Fantasy Football season on Sunday I thought it was time for me to release my own.

This is my first post on eDraft so you might be wondering why I think I'm qualified to give you advice on Fantasy Football. Fair question. For one thing I've won my Fantasy Football League three of the last four years with last year coming as a huge upset (thank you Michael Vick). Second, I've been a writer for Bleacher Report for the last 20 months, covering almost every sport imaginable to man.

No, I'm not the talented Mr. Roto. But yes, I think I can help guide you to a fantasy title this year.

Round 1

Love: Ray Rice, RB, Baltimore Ravens

Rice is a beast. I think the guy could easily finish the year as the No. 1 running back in all of fantasy football, and there's little reason to think he won't.

Rice plays in a very difficult division in the AFC North, going against stingy defenses like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals six times a year. He still owns them. Last season Rice averaged almost 24 fantasy points per game against his divisional rivals and turned in his top three performances and five of his top six overall against them.

Rice doesn't play too many difficult defenses this year other than those he tore up last season, and without much competition in the backfield he won't have any carries stolen.

The reason I'm picking Rice to be the top running back is simple: He's in the best possible system. While other top running backs may have competition for their carries or a passing game that dominates their run, Rice is the feature back and Joe Flacco isn't exactly Aaron Rodgers. I like Rice to lead your team.

Hate: Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars

MJD is a tank. He has the most carries of any running back over the last three seasons, but I don't see him continuing to dominate this year.

The Jaguars are looking to improve their passing game, and to do so they have to give Blaine Gabbert opportunities. By drafting Justin Blackmon in the first round they began building around Gabbert and have proven that they want to throw the ball. This is a pass-driven league and the Jags are trying to get with the times.

Jones-Drew also has his on-going holdout to hold him back. Without the time to practice his running game, the Jags may get used to the Gabbert-to-Blackmon connection they've established and been using in training camp. MJD is streaky enough as is and needs to get his butt to training camp if he wants to stay elite.
The longer his holdout the worse he'll do.

Round 2

Love: Rob Gronkowski, TE, New England Patriots

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I've been drafting tight ends high since drafting tight ends high was cool. I love these big guys near the endzone, and they have to potential to change a game with a couple of touchdowns.

I'm high on Gronk. I know that he had a huge year so everyone is going to be keying in on him, but that's never stopped him before. He's simply too big, fast, strong and has too good of hands to be stopped. Even last season he racked up three 20-point games in the last five games despite being well-known as the Patriots' No. 1 target.

This season I expect more of the same from Gronk. He's crazy young and still improving, and if you managed to grab Brady in the first round this combination will likely be better than any QB-WR combo in the league.

Hate: Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans

Yes, he's the second-best wide receiver in the game today. No, he won't put up the second-best numbers this season.

Playing on the Texans is actually a disadvantage for Johnson. The team has a ton of options to throw to other than him and the supposed No. 1 running back. They probably won't be passing as much as we'd like, nor will they all be going to Johnson. He's already a very streaky receiver and his game essentially relies on whether he snags a big catch or a touchdown week after week.

Johnson also struggled with injuries last season, missing nine games last season. If he stays healthy he is a good option, but he is not worth the No. 12 average draft position that he has warranted in ESPN leagues. Believe it or not, that's actually ahead of Gronkowski. Make the right call.

Round 3

Love: Michael Vick, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

Look, I know the guy tanked a lot of your seasons last year (mine included), but he's a risk worth taking. The hand injury in the preseason may look dangerous, but the third round is the perfect time to take a risk if you took two safe picks in the first two.

Whether it's Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson or Vick a risk in the third round is a good strategy, but I'd take Vick if he's available. There's still the potential to be one of the top fantasy quarterbacks this season if he's healthy. He's the best running-quarterback out there (yes, even over Cam Newton). He has a good arm, incredible legs and has been in the system, whereas Newton was running a simplified offense against simplified defenses.

Vick could easily be the No 1 QB this year, and if you take Rice, Gronk and Vick you could have one of the highest scoring teams you've ever seen…barring any unforeseen injuries. Just make sure you grab a good backup…Peyton Manning?

Hate: Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland Raiders

Healthy concerns galore, DMC is a risky pick—and not in a good way. McFadden missed the last nine games last season after being knocked out of Week 7 after two carries for four yards. While he was absolutely on fire before the injury, I don't expect him to come back this year like he started last.

While he is a great player who might be worth a risk in the fourth or fifth rounds, I doubt that he'll be worth it or fall that far.
