Mark Sanchez and his Future with the Eagles.

Mark Sanchez and his Future with the Eagles.

With Mark Sanchez moving on from bad situation in New York with the Jets, to a new opportunity with the Philadelphia Eagles.  Many wonder what to expect from the former first round draft pick who seemed to be a star in the making in his first two years in the league.  Are the Eagles the right team for him? And will he ever be a starting quarterback again or just a nice back up?

In 2009 Sanchez was picked by the Jets with the fifth overall pick in the draft in hopes that he’ll become the team's franchise quarterback.  He struggled in his first years like most rookie quarterbacks thrust into a starting role throwing 20 interceptions to just 12 touchdowns.  But he was able to lead the Jets on a deep playoff run in each of his first two seasons.  In his second and third years Sanchez looked to be improving as a passer.  He was still throwing a lot of interceptions but he was throwing more touchdowns and he broke the 3,000 yard mark each time.

The trouble came in his fourth year when he threw 18 interceptions to only 13 touchdowns, and a career high nine fumbles one of which being the infamous “”Butt Fumble”.  The turnovers were too much for Jets fans and the front office as they took Geno Smith in the second round last year.  Sanchez went down with a season ending injury in the pre season and that’s all she wrote for his time in New York.

But Sanchez was once a young talented signal caller with the potential to become a franchise quarterback.  Is he destined to just ride the pine in Philadelphia or is Nick Foles’ job as secure as we think?

Sanchez wasn’t in the best situation for a young quarterback and we saw evidence of that this year when Smith also had his share of struggles.  With the Eagles Sanchez will be living the quarterbacks paradise with Chip Kelly and his run and gun offense.  There’s also way more weapons to work with in Philadelphia.  Receivers like Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson are capable of scoring from anywhere on the field.  Not to mention Darren Sproles and LeSean McCoy two of the shiftiest running backs in the league.

All in all we me see Sanchez become the player he was supposed to become in Kelly’s offense.  Worst case scenario he pushes Foles to become a better quarterback.  One of the best ways to make a player better is bringing in competition to spark development.  Both Sanchez and Foles with gain from competing for the starting spot this offseason and the Eagles will benefit when other teams start to call trying to acquire the loser.
