In the wake of Tony Romo's fractured clavicle and placement on the injured reserve/designated to return, the Dallas Cowboys addressed their slim pickings at the quarterback position, trading for Buffalo Bills quarterback Matt Cassel. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported the trade.
Cassel, 33, was traded to the Buffalo Bills early in the offseason to compete for the starting quarterback job, but was quickly surpassed by Tyrod Taylor. Buffalo released him on Sept. 8 but picked him back up three days later. Now Buffalo is swapping a 2017 seventh-round pick for the Dallas Cowboys 2017 fifth-round pick.
Dallas promoted Kellen Moore off the practice squad earlier today and according to Albert Breer, he will back up Brandon Weeden until Cassel learns the Cowboys' offense. At that point, Moore will likely be released, clear waivers and sign back with the Cowboys' practice squad.
Romo has been ruled out for the next eight games with his placement on IR-DR, meaning the pressure will be on Weeden to carry an offense without Dez Bryant. It's an awful situation for the Cowboys to be in and neither Moore or Cassel will ease any of those concerns.
