Name: Taylor Lewan
Position: Offensive Tackle
College: Michigan
How Taylor Lewan Meets Team Needs
The recent signing of Branden Albert to a five-year, $47 million deal would suggest the Dolphins will target elsewhere in the first round of the NFL Draft. Nevertheless, I believe Lewan would be an upgrade over Tyson Clabo and Bryant McKinnie so why not select him if he is the best player on your board? Giving third-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill as much time in the pocket as possible is crucial to his development.
Impact As A Rookie
Lewan has the requisite tools to start immediately as a rookie for most teams whether that be at left or right tackle. Each team will have a different opinion on how to use him and where he is best suited in the NFL. In regard to the Dolphins, Lewan would be plugged in immediately at right tackle with Albert protecting the quarterbacks blind side for the near future. However, an injury to Albert or a dip in form and Lewan can be switched with minimal fuss.
What Taylor Lewan Does Well:
A nasty run blocker, Lewan is downright dominant when he locks his hands onto a defender making the play as good as over. At 6’8” tall he has outstanding size for the tackle position and is very durable having started 35 of 37 games there. Lewan plays with a nasty demeanor and can easily anchor his lower body against a bull rush. Finally, he does well at getting to the second level and playing through the whistle.
What Taylor Lewan Struggles With:
A choppy kick slide results in a lack of fluidity that slows him down – if that can be improved he will excel against speed rushers. Although most athleticism, or an apparent lack of, rumours were quashed at the combine, he may be seen as right tackle if he can’t bring his quality of pass protection up to the level of his run blocking. Being as tall as he is has its drawbacks as he occasionally lunges and reaches for blocks instead of bending at the knee and applying the correct technique.
