Michael Vick has been one of the most electrifying players in the NFL in the last decade. His success in his first couple years inspired the recent group of mobile quarterbacks to enter the NFL. But the last couple years Vick has had his share of struggles of staying healthy and keeping his starting job in Philadelphia. This year with the Eagles moving into the Nick Foles era, Vick is left to find his next employment opportunity, but what team would he fit with the best?
My vote is for the Minnesota Vikings for several good reasons. The number one reason is competition, in this case competition at the quarterback position.
The Vikings brought back Matt Cassel, who played the best out of the three quarterbacks that started for the team last year, but that doesn’t mean he should be the de facto starter week one. Cassel struggled just like the other two and its hard to believe that the team won’t take a quarterback in this years draft. This is where Vick comes into play.
I’m one to believe that rookie quarterbacks should not be forced to start in their first year. Young quarterbacks do a lot better when they don’t have the initial pressure of carrying a franchise, take Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady for example. The best thing to do would be to bring in Vick, let him and Cassel duke it out for the starting position for now and let the rookie sit back and learn from two veterans who’ve been successful in the NFL.
Vick has also become one of the leagues top leaders, other players love to play with Vick and they’ll follow him anywhere. He’s the type of player that could be a great mentor to a young quarterback. He probably had a hand in helping Nick Foles turn into the player he is today. He’s a guy that could come in and start for the first year and become a top backup/mentor when the young quarterback is ready to take the keys to the offense.
Finally he fits great with the offense in Minnesota. The Vikings have a couple talented receivers and tight ends that can make plays after the catch. He also would have an ok running back named Adrian Peterson who has a good game every now and then.
This would be a dream pairing, arguably the best running quarterback from the past decade and the best running back in the NFL today. Vick obviously wouldn’t be able to scramble around like he used to, but with Peterson behind him it’ll make winning games a lot easier.
Right now the Vikings are missing a quarterback and a solid veteran like Vick could change the team for the better for the long run. Don’t go with Cassel one of the quarterbacks that basically got the last coaching staff fired. He’s a good back up but hasn’t proved himself as a starter. The only knock on Vick is that he can’t stay healthy, and he can help the Vikings a lot more than Cassel as well.
