As the 2014 NFL Draft approaches, the Oakland Raiders have many options with their fifth overall pick. Reggie McKenzie has improved this Raiders team through free agency and filled many needs, but they still need to rebuild through the draft. Here’s a look at some of the Raiders biggest needs in the draft.
First and foremost is a wide receiver. The Raiders have had inconsistent production from their receiving core for some time now, and could use as many reliable targets for quarterback Matt Schaub as possible. Rod Streater had a nice 2013 season with 888 yards and four touchdowns in 60 receptions. Denarius Moore on the other hand had 695 yards with five touchdowns in 46 receptions. Last year Streater earned the role of a number one receiver, but need someone who can be a dynamic game changer.
James Jones signed with the silver and black this offseason and will bring some experience to the offense. Jones had 817 yards with three touchdowns in 59 receptions.
Sammy Watkins' name has been tied to the Raiders as he could provide a spark on the offense. He is a top option in the draft, but either way the Raiders need to add a receiver.
The Raiders also have a need at offensive tackle after losing Jared Veldheer to free agency. Donald Penn was acquired via free agency and they have Menelik Watson, however he remains questionable at the right tackle position. Jake Matthews or Greg Robinson could be a solution for the Raiders.
Oakland also needs to draft a quarterback who they can develop. The acquisition of Schaub gives them more leeway when choosing a quarterback, however they still need one for the future. They will have quite the variety to choose from as well with a deep quarterback class this year.
The Raiders also need some depth and additions at the cornerback position which can be acquired via draft.
Even though Oakland has shaken things up a bit through free agency by bringing in many new faces to establish a veteran presence, their draft needs haven't changed much. The only thing that has changed is the urgency of certain needs.
With the free agent acquisitions, the Raiders will be able to develop young talent through the draft rather than be forced to throw them in the fire right away. The rebuilding process will continue in Oakland, but they will be able to build around drafted players for the future.
This is an important and exciting draft for the silver and black, and the talent they choose will have an impact on the team for years to come.
